Sounds like Vanacek was really good in the 1-0 loss to Canada. He's expected to get most of their starts.

Samsonov will likely be Russia's starter as he's the only player with a KHL experience. His backups will be Alexander Georgiyev, who plays in Finland, and Maxim Tretyak.

wait, no NA prospects? what a shame :sarcasm:
Well, the Caps only have one NA prospect at all who's likely to become an impact NHL player, let alone a U20 one. Serious lack of good old Canadian kids in the system, which is why we're stuck with soft Swedes.

Let's knock it off with the nationalistic comments before it gets any worse. Focus on the hockey/prospects.

The Czechs got rid of Prerost as their coach for this year's tournament. That alone should be enough to make Vanecek look a lot better than he did last year. Samsonov should be the favourite for Best Goalie.

Siegenthaler is the one that I'm most interested in watching, the Swiss have a pretty decent team even without Fiala going and he is one of their best players.

Fiala not going was a huge disappointment.

Czech's look like to be pretty average team without Vrana and Pastrnak. Losing those 2 is going to be huge miss for them.

Vanacek looked alright, stopped several good chances, but overall Russia didn't test him very much.

Nylander demolished by some Swiss guy.

Finns have 3 potential top-10 picks in their 2nd unit (Puljujarvi, Laine and Juolevi). Something to watch, although they are each propably out of reach for Caps.

Haven't watched any other games but if Sweden stays healthy they seem to be the favorite for the championship. Alex Nylander looks to be as good or maybe better than his brother

how deep has 2016 draft been expected for talents?
Strong through the top two rounds but not tremendously deep overall (albeit that could change in the second half).

Some players to watch that might be available for the Caps first rounder, assuming they keep it:

USA: Debrincat, McAvoy, Krys
Sweden: Asplund, Grundstrom
Czech: Stransky

Anyone know why Samsonov didn't start? I thought he was like one of the best goaltending prospects in the world and the clear #1 for Russia?
