It's not looking good at all. And I'm talking long-term, this series is long gone. When they extended some of these guys(Oshie) we knew the contract would stink later on when their play fell off a cliff. Oshie hasn't even been sandbagging as bad as some of the other guys. It paid off in a Cup so can't complain too much but I don't think they have any ammo to keep reloading. Not like we can just trade our old vets for younger players to keep up, we'd get pennies on the dollar. I once thought Kuzy would be a stud and heir apparent to Ovi but he clearly isn't the answer. I don't know how much we'd get back for him even, everyone else in the league sees the same thing we do. Pretty soon just watching Ovi chase the goal scoring record will be our Stanley Cup.

I dont know about the sheer doom and gloom that your post describes, but I do agree that if the Caps were to have any successful transition period, it would have to rely on Kuznetsov. We all knew that he was the key for the Caps to remain in prominence after the rest succumb to old age.

With the fading of Kuzy's star is the twilight of the Caps light.

At least, that is until the next generation takes place.

Doom and gloom is far more appropriate down 3-1 than say game 48

Well there is doom and gloom about a series and there is doom and gloom about the future of the franchise.

I think that prospects like McMichael, Lapierre, Fehervary and Alexeyev will buoy the Caps into a decent team. Don't know if that's enough to win a Cup or just be a perennial playoff team but never good enough to be top tier.

Or maybe it will be better to have some really dark years after all. To get the next Ovechkin. I don't know.

But people who act like we will be the next Buffalo are just being a little too down on themselves and the team.

It's crazy to me the people who were in love with Chara, over the moon with Mantha vs. Vrana, and thought Dillon was playing well the last month or so are now the one's calling for GMBM's head.

GMBM has done very well for this team. I think, and thought so at the time, the Vrana trade was a huge blunder but you've got a coach who refuses to play a young player. You have to do something to swap that. That player was also due a raise and you've got your Captain going to need a pay raise next year. He paid a premium for that, but that wasn't entirely his fault. Shit, everyone thought the Panik signing was a steal when he first signed it. Thems the breaks. Sometimes shit doesn't work out.
First of all, never was in love with Chara. Looked good during the season for a guy who's 90 years old but that's it. Then, never was over the moon about the Mantha trade. Been on a record here saying the playoffs will define if the trade is good or not. The trade turned out to be a disaster. Always hated Dillon's trade, signing and game all at the same time. Not sure what hate more. He just shouldn't have been on this team at the moment and he's one of those reasons why people are finally calling for Maclellan's head. His firing is long overdue.

I don't know if it's doom & gloom. I'm certainly pessimistic about our chances of remaining a Stanley Cup caliber team as our aging, highly paid vets hit the wall from what I've witnessed the last few years. Shedding draft picks to get trades done because of salary cap issues isn't going to help us reload. Sometimes it's better to just bottom out in order to reload quicker, not that I want to have to watch the Caps be a bottom feeder. But I've seen teams live in that purgatory stage for a long time, where they didn't quite suck enough to reload but weren't good enough to win anything. The WFT has spent a good amount of time there.

I looked at Chara as a signing that would give the defensive prospects more time to develop. He is a stop gap and experience and nothing else at this point. Additionally, it's cool to have him play for the Caps, too bad it wasn't during his prime. Dillon is another veteran to give the defensive prospects more time in Hershey. I much rather see the young guns play and glad this stupid expansion stuff will be out of the way. As for Mantha, it's way too early to say it's a good or bad trade imho. This is his first playoff and he's young enough with a contract to see what he provides. Who knows he could become a hero Sunday's game. It's not like he's getting his chances.

Jensen has thrived playing with Chara.

Vrana had 0 points last two playoffs... and Mantha already has points so he’s been better.

issue is our top 3 centers (who are all hurt or rusty) are not driving any offense and have 2 combined points. One of them a garbage time goal on a lucky Ovi deflection off a defender.

our main centers cannot drive any offense. That’s the main issue this series. You can’t win if your top 3 centers stink.

Actually I would equate the WFT to the Buffalo Sabres. More so than Purgatory.

There will never be another Ovechkin. He is unique.

They may get another superstar eventually like Gartner or Bondra, though.

To be fair it is time for our big boys to step it up. We need to shift momentum in the series. The Bruins are beatable, so lets get them. No more excuses.

This is an idiotic comment that's completely disconnected from reality. These guys are playing a violent, tough sport at the highest level under difficult circumstances and a lot of their injuries are typically due to TRAUMA from impact, not age/overuse.

But I guess some people look at a guy like Vrana and think he's healthy because he's young rather than because he's a perimeter player and breakaway specialist who avoids contact.
Recovery from any injury is limited when you’re older. I think the comment is legitimate. With the exception of the word “too”. The Caps are an older team. Injury recovery is a weakness for older teams and the Caps are unfortunately suffering for it right now.

Do we have any data or information about what the injuries are, and whether or not the recovery time is longer than usual? No. So it's a bullshit assumption based on bias.

Also these guys are almost all in their EARLY 30s. We're not talking about 50-60 year olds.
