so you're gonna run an 19 man roster?

they have 29.5m in cap space if they move mikheyev with miller, pettersson, boeser, garland, suter, hoglander, aman, pdg up front and hughes, soucy and juulsen on the blueline. you're 2-3 forwards and 1-2 dmen short and 3m over the cap

No? All that post highlighted is we could almost make everything work but would have to lose someone. My second post below, I opted to cut Lindholm loose and had 6.8M left to play with.

Filling in LW2 and a 7th defenseman with 6.8M wouldn't be terribly hard. For the sake of argument, just assume Tanev is a placeholder since I don't think we'll get him that cheap.

Random:

If we don’t retain Lindholm, would you guys do Mikheyev for Tavares straight up?

Mikheyev has two years left, Tavares has one.

Mikheyev + Lindholm’s next contract = Tavares + $1MM depth player

idk that tavares provides the same utility as lindholm, even subtracting two years of mik... i think we need the leafs to retain. $2.5m to overcome the oel hit next year and i'd do it.

don't think tavares is going anywhere though. would bet the leafs just eat this last season of his deal and then re-sign him to something like a 4x3. but maybe if they can replace him directly with stamkos they do consider it...

Fair, we’ll have to agree to disagree regarding Garland and Joshua.
i mean the way i think about it is like this..

Keep Garland-Joshua-Bluegar and add a 5M 50ish point forward to Petey.
Cost of lines:
Hog (1.1) - Petey (11.6) - ??? (5)
Dak (4) - Bluegar (3.5) - Garland (5)
Expected point output:
Hog (40pt) - Petey (90pt) - ???(50pt)
Dak (40) - Bluegar (35) - Garland (50)

Total cost: 30.1M
Expected pt output : 285pts

Cost of lines:
Hog (1.1) - Petey (11.6) - Guentzel (8.5)
Dak (4) - Lindholm (7) - Pod (1)
Expected point output:
Hog (40pt) - Petey (100pt) - Guentzel(80pt)
Dak (40) - Lindholm (50) - Pod (20)

Total cost: 33.2M
Expected pt output : 330pts

I mean yeah we end up paying more but I think it's safe to project a ton more offense than keeping Garland-Joshua together.

Hell even if we keep Garland and Joshua together and get Guentzel, the point project is lower and we get less utlility and insurance. For example, with Lindholm you can move him up if anything happens to Miller and Petey, you can't do that with Bluegar without tanking results. With Guentzel and Lindholm, there are 2 guys we can put in to juice PP1 and PP2 and we know Garland is not that effective on the PP.

Cost of lines:
Hog (1.1) - Petey (11.6) - Guentzel (8.5)
Dak (4) - Bluegar (3.5) - Garland (5)
Expected point output:
Hog (40pt) - Petey (100pt) - Guentzel(80pt)
Dak (40) - Bluegar (35) - Garland (50)

Total cost: 33.7M
Expected pt output - 325

I think it's a mistake to try to cheap out on a winger for Petey. Like I said elsewhere, elite players plays with elite players for a reason. It's not realistic to assume that star players can just carry lesser players and dominate, Petey is good but he is not generational good.

It's right back to the rebuild crowd of last year who bitched and moaned about Tocchet and the Hronek trade to no end. Difference being that because we're division champs that crowd has gone silent until we get knocked out.
No, it's because we pulled off a miracle. We literally needed a GM of the year performance to be more than a bubble team this year and not only did we get that, we also got an mvp coach performance + vezina and norris performances + an insane PDO bender that rebuilt this teams confidence and identity.

We won the lottery and it's awesome. What we got is rarer than winning a draft lotto and we all know how much that transforms a team. No one is going back to talking about rebuilding for at least a couple years.

First order of business is to find out what the asset cost would be to ditch Mikheyev's contract via trade, then either deal him or buy him out.

The thing that hasn't been discussed much is Boeser's situation. He's the only legitimate top-six winger on the entire roster and his next contract will be significant so they might as well try to get that settled sooner rather than later. It will affect every decision that goes beyond the upcoming season; getting a framework in place for that deal prior to July 1 would make it easier to project what they can do elsewhere. My guess is that Boeser will prioritize term and movement protection over the maximization of annual $.

The thing is, getting that elite winger relies on them watching to sign with us. Guentzel is going to be the golden goose for practically every team looking to improve. He reportedly turned down 9M from Pittsburgh. So we're not getting him for less.

Regardless, our success this season came from depth not superstar players carrying the load. Not only that but Pettersson still managed 89 points with a revolving door of Mikheyev, Lafferty, Suter, Garland and Hoglander on his line. Of course, there was dominate stint with the Lotto line but that was short lived.

I think reuniting him with Toffoli or bringing in someone like Bertuzzi would be more than enough to push him back into the 100 point range. Assuming they click, of course.

For me, adding both Toffoli (4.4M) and Bertuzzi (5M) is a better gain than Guentzel at 9.5M+. To be clear, it doesn't mean we get those specific players but just using them for an example.

I mean getting Guentzel is not a slam dunk so what I suggest is more like .. if we can get him, then sacrifices will need to be made. I am definitely not suggesting we should sacrifice players first and then pray we land the guy.

Well that's the thing, we have to plan better to better support him. I would lean towards the path of, spend the f***ing money now and get him a good/elite winger instead of doing the Canes and dick around with budget option and pray that it works and find out it doesn't and waste time. Because the moment we find out it doesn't work is probably during the playoffs.

Even last year when Petey put up 100points, Kuz was right there with like 70pts. It's really hard for Petey to hit his ceiling if his linemates are limited. I would argue that if Guentzel's is a true talent PPG guy, he could hit 90 with Petey and Petey can hit like 110-120 with him and whoever is the 3rd wheel as long will get the benefit of playing with them. Imagine Lekk along Petey and Guentzel, the gravity of those 2 players will open him up for shots shots shots shots shots.

Your Vancouver Canucks likely have a better chance of signing Hollyburn Country Club's Sam Reinhart than Omaha, Nebraska's Jake Guentzel.

vrbata went sideways big time in year two. still not sure why but he checked out. the idea of signing miller was a good retool move. the retool fizzled due to other bad moves.

i bitched and moaned about tochett and hronek a fair bit, but i was wrong.
He was upset he didn't get to play with a competent C after they moved him away from Henrik and Daniel No Bonino and Sutter was injured even

Ahh whatever Krutov ive been wrong about lots and that's sports (players can suck in bad roles and be just fine in others and sometimes the chemistry just doesnt work even though the talent is there and injuries) ) and sure i wanted a better pick and chance at Bedard too..

The thing is you have to try and relate to the driving forces behind what is going on when you criticize if you want to be fair. To be fair if they wanted to be successful this year they needed to hit the ground running not start at camp trying to figure it out. That proved to be 100% spot on
Those were two quality young NHL goalies. Teams run with stuff like this all the time.

There were so, so many bigger problems with that team that needed addressing to compete that mattered more than replacing young average goaltending with old average goaltending at a massively higher cost.
We argued this for years and i agree with the sentiment that Lack and Markstrom should have provided enough upside to just go with it but i just cannot see how Benning and Linden would have been able to sell that to Aquilini who was firing people in rapid fashion and still thinking he could win with that team.

The fact that perpetuated after 2015/16 was unfathomable

We already have a better PP QB in Hughes,

Are you okay with one offensive dman on our team? just one? guys again lets not make knee-jerk reactions. We might not see the same Zadarov over the course of 82 games. Now i'm not suggesting not to sign him, if you ask me, we need to sign both as both play different roles to make our team good.

The parent Vancouver Canucks have recalled 13 players from their Abbotsford farm team. I guess the most surprising addition was Danila Klimovich.

I suppose if he is recalled, he continues to get paid?. That's about the only reason I can think of. What happened to this guy, this year?

We don’t have enough good transition D, or cycle breakers. I’d like to improve there. If that’s a defensive guy or an offensive guy doesn’t matter.

Sherwood, Cousins, Duhaime, Amadio, Trenin, Blais, and Noesen are all good bottom 6 options.

Some cap casualties/potential draft day trades I hope we target guys like Buchnevich, Colton, Whitecloud, Cirelli, Konecny, Necas, Ehlers, Bjorkstrand etc for the top 6/top4.

Agreed, Myers doesn’t work against McDavid.

Honestly using Petey and Boeser as wingers against him didn’t really work either. Isn’t this exact situation why we pay Mik so much?

The only problem with huge defenders is they tend to be slow mobility wise in some situations. Starting to get exposed, we can't get out to the permitter to make checks and then we just let them set up.

Mik and Hogs are at least a threat to score, PDG is just a warm body. We shouldn't be worried about defensive balance throughout the lineup vs a 1 line team.

They are not really though. Definitely not Mikheyev, and Hoglander is completely overwhelmed. Totally invisible.

Still can't fathom why Tocchet at times plays 'mind-games' with certain players....and Hoglander seems to be one of his favorites.

The reason the Canucks aren't scoring has very little to do with Hoglander. As for PDG, he isn't likely to score a goal no matter how games he plays.

Maybe the coach figures that calling out Hoglander will somehow motivate him.....but the Canucks problems in these playoffs have very little to do with a kid like Hoglander. It's their defense, which is just being caved in right now.
