What does that even mean? Sakic was so good he didn't "need" playoff experience but lesser players do? Because ... why?

What exactly is McCann going to "learn" in 4 or 5 games that he hasn't learned in 70-80 games?

Will he skate better?
Shoot more accurately?
Think the game better?

I'd honestly like to know "what" this playoff experience teaches that then translates into a player becoming so much better.

Any concrete examples?

Okay.

Edler and Tanev are bloody well not a top pairing on a contending team, period. Edler remains far, far too inconsistent. He manages to sneak in the points, but he (like most of our dmen) still makes eye-wateringly bad giveaways on a regular basis. I counted about four totally unforced errors before I started fast-forwarding the game today. He's big and strong, but almost never actually uses his size or strength to his advantage. His shot has almost completely deserted him. Like in ot: puck goes back to him...he slowly winds up, of course fires into the defender's shinpad, puck goes the other way forcing him into desperation mode. Tanev's got great instincts, good skater, good passer, but has no offense. No shot. Not big, not strong, not tough. Neither are remotely tough or intimidating. Both absorb a lot more hits than they ever throw. If they were just a shutdown pair and that was that, they'd be great.

But let's get real. They're a top d pair the same way Tyler Bozak is a #1 centre. This particular NHL team just doesn't have anyone better.

And yeah, the team's mediocre. The forward lines have a good enough mix of vets and kids for now, I'm really liking McCann and Virtanen, I think they'll be really, really good players in the future, but it's the d corps I'm worried about. It's just plain not bloody good enough. Edler and Tanev I just said my piece on. Hutton's obviously a good piece moving forward but after that? Hamhuis is small and slowing down. Bartkowski's a good skater but does literally nothing else well. Sbisa's got a good physical game, but does literally nothing else well. Weber's the only guy with anything resembling a good shot, but he's a 6/7 pp specialist on a good team. And this is a lesser defense than the one that got chewed up and spat out last playoffs. Nobody's tough. Nobody's intimidating. Nobody even tries to clear the crease. Nobody even tries to protect the goalie. And a hell of a lot more often than not, the goals against around here are preceded by dmen ****ing up. They're small, soft, and mistake-prone. And who's in the pipes coming up? We better hope one of our Russian Redwoods turn out to be serious players.

IMHO, if this team is going to ever be a serious threat while the Sedins are still on it, there have to be some pretty big changes to the complexion of the team, particularly on the back end.

Have to agree with this. This organization's defense is in trouble, now AND in the future (unlike among the forwards and goalies, where they at least have a promising future).

I understand that it shows you "how" to play in playoffs - playoff experience *at all* helps future playoffs - but that isn't the same as "developing" a young player. Players develop into good players based on their own innate skills, work ethic, opportunity, injury, and some luck. Jonathan Toews missed the playoffs in his rookie season and still became a prolific playoff player. Missing as a young player didn't hinder his "development". Cody Hodgson went to a cup final his rookie season and absorbed all that "experience" and today is a tremendously mediocre player.

You're putting too much stock in it as a developmental tool.

Decent enough game by the boyz. Thought they played better overall than in Minny where they stunk in the 1st. No matter, I'll take three of four road points v good teams every time.

Good game by McCann. Getting more comfortable with the puck and tries to make plays.

Baertschi... I give up. The penalty was the only time I heard his name (I missed bulk of the 3rd). Looks to unload the puck the instant he gets it. Lacks confidence, speed, engagement level, etc. I guess he'll play out the season as a sub but after that Benning will find a replacement. Shink is on deck.

BitTurbo is the voice of reason on the staying the course v strip it down rebuilt. Sedins are still elite and it's up the youngsters to become good supporting players in the next 2-3 years. If they don't then we'll know they won't be good enough for front line duties and none of it will matter.

When even a tiny segment of a fanbase is open to discussing the cause of continuing suckage as having something to do with injuries to two 1st overalls--because the other two 1st overalls and few top 10s can't hack it--you've reached the absolute bottom. NEVER go full Oilers!

When Sutter comes back our PK should get a boost. Add Hutton, continued improvement by McCann, and maybe a better second half from Bo should give management enough bodies to do what is necessary with Vrby and Hammer at the deadline without giving up on the playoffs. Nobody in our division scares me and getting in Calgary style is very doable.

You can send him down to play for Utica in the playoffs then Bowie.

Incoming condescending, obscenity-laced K2B rant (although admittedly, I'm not sure how one could watch these players play, understand the results they produce, and then make this comparison).

I understand his opinion but that comparison is asinine and insulting.

Its a positive no matter how u cut it.

If youre arguing a tank is more valuable to the team overall than rookies getting experience i would tend to agree.

But if were simply too good with the sedins for that a playoff game changes everything. Let's remember the calgary series with a grain of salt.

Wd is unanimously disliked. I never defended him post kid line seperation

As for the actual game...

- 4th line and 3rd D-pairing still playing too much.

--- Bartkowski wasn't as bad last night as he was the game before but still shouldn't be getting the minutes he is. Sbisa with two awful games, and obviously they come after I defended him a bit in his own thread. How can anyone think a Sbartkowski pairing is a good idea? I guess the same guy that thought the Sbieksa pairing was a good idea.

--- They're all 4th liners but it's clear that Dorsett is a notch below his linemates. It won't happen but I'd like to see Virtanen replace Dorsett next game, just to see what that line looks like.

- Got some secondary scoring against Minnesota but the Sedins were alone once again in Dallas. Horvat's line gave almost nothing offensively and although McCann's line had some time in the offensive zone, they didn't create a whole lot. The 4th line also had some decent shifts, like they do most games, but I don't expect many goals from this line.

- We did have a lot of shots and o-zone time against a good team, so that's good. But even though Dallas only had 25 shots, a lot of them were dangerous chances around the net. Not sure if we played as well as the shots and loser point indicate.

- PP setups still suck. Edler still needs to be taken off and Hansen should be rewarded and take Burrows's spot (his RH shot works better, anyway). They also sometimes try the Sedin - Sedin - Vrbata 3-forward set, which is a joke; neither Daniel or Vrbata wants to or is equipped to play the slot, so they just pass it around the outside forever.

It's not a negative, and I'm not saying that *in a vacuum* I wouldn't prefer it, however when compared with the potential value of a top 10 pick (given that that is the trade off) then I don't think it is *enough*.

But I can see you've said as much in your post so I guess no disagreement here. I just tend to dislike broad statements like that when there is no actual evidence on hand to support it but people cite it anyway like it's just obvious and shouldn't even be questioned.

nah he accounted for that, they "sneak in points" i guess they "sneak in results" too

This isn't about the points they produce, it's the scoring chances against. Sure, everyone makes mistakes sometimes, they're only human. But it's the same mistakes the same way that cause those totally needless breakdowns. Pucks lazily thrown up the middle of the ice. Pucks reflexively thrown up the boards to nobody except the waiting player wearing the wrong colours. Lost one on one battles. Flubbed passes. Flubbed shots. And just plain bad decisions. While these issues are obviously progressively worse the further down the lineup you go, I still don't hold out much hope for anything in the playoffs assuming we're even in there.

"Anything can happen, look at LA!" Yeah, okay. We're just short a Norris candidate, a Vezina candidate, a Selke candidate, and previous success to draw upon.

We were also 1-7 yesterday including no goals on 5-on-3 and a 4-minute double-minor.

The PP isn't awful right now but that doesn't mean it can't be improved.

Edler (and every other dman except maybe Hutton) is awful on the PP. that is the biggest problem IMO. that little floater wrist shot into the goalie's crest on the 5on3 was just sad. he has no creativity to run a PP and his point shot is garbage unless he has 10 seconds to get it off.

Weber and Edler both do pretty well compared to their piers, as does the team when they are on the ice. They benefit from playing with the twins, but most of them play with good players on the PP.

Edler is painful to watch.

It's hard to imagine someone with less vision, and play-making ability.

?? Edler is our top unit PP for a reason. Notice every single coach we've had has used Edler. He is our best offensive defenceman, christ.

Errorhoff was our best offensive d man when he was here. Salo was great on the PP as well. We've clearly lacked a guy who can run the point on the PP over the last few years, as Edler has gone into more of a defensive dman
