RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed forward Lucas Wallmark to a three-year, entry-level contract. On the NHL level, the deal will pay Wallmark $575,000 in 2015-16, $600,000 in 2016-17 and $650,000 in 2017-18. Wallmark receives $65,000 per season on the American Hockey League (AHL) level and a signing bonus of $225,000.

“Lucas has good hockey sense and can contribute in all three zones in different situations,” said Francis. “We are pleased that he has chosen to continue his professional development in our organization.”

I really like Wallmark. Definitely a good 4th round pick and I'm glad they got him under contract.

skating seems to be the only thing holding this guy back, is he going to be in Charlotte next year?

His agent said that he's going to fight for a spot at the camp, and if that don't succeed, he maybe going back to Luleå for one year. But it was not set in stone.

Fun with more swedes!

That's a very good contract , wallmark will become a very good center and is already a top 3 of sweden's 95's.
Any chance you guys would accept Sutter + 4th + Kunitz for him?

I remember skating was an issue with Rask as well, but he spent a lot of time working on it in Charlotte putting in a lot of extra power skating work. While Rask wouldn't be considered a great skater by any means, I think he became good enough to be effective in the NHL. Hopefully Wallmark follows suit, if his skating is indeed what would hold him back.

Yeah, no. He's generally viewed as a guy that can ultimately help this team in a few years. With his playmaking capabilities, he's the type of player that we truly do need. Needs to put a little meat on those bones. I suspect that one or more Swedes are on our draft radar too (and perhaps a Finn or two).

He is very talented a guy that now is nhl scout had him as a potential first overall pick in his first draft before the season started.

He is a very complete player, has a good shoot, 2-way game. the only problems for him are skating and strength.

Well, remember, he was a 4th round pick himself and is still just a prospect. If salary wasn't an issue, how could you not make that trade? For ***** and giggles:

Kunitz // Staal // Lindholm
Skinner // Staal // Semin
Gerbe // Sutter // Rask
Nestrasil // McClement // Nash

Hanifin // Faulk
Hainsey // Murphy
Liles // ???

I'm too lazy to look up what side Kunitz plays

Wait, Sutter, Kunitz and a 4th for Lucas Wallmark?!?

Uh, I hate Kunitz... but ok, sure. Where do I sign?

That's kind of how I feel about it. Not a fan of Kunitz; with our C depth and his salary, I don't really want Sutter back. A 2015 4th for our 2014 4th. Yeah, I do that because I don't think you can go wrong.

Kunitz is 35 and has two years left at $4M and 3.5M and looked close to done this year. 40 points playing with Crosby is 25 points with any of our centers. That trade sees us take on a massive amount of salary (7.3M for next year) and doesn't really make us much better. It would be only weeks before Kunitz is mentioned in the same breath as Semin. I'd pass on this deal and I'm pretty sure RF would as well, if only because PK would tell him to **** off.

For the "of course we'd make this trade" people: why? It doesn't address really any of our needs: neither Kunitz or Sutter are defensemen, nor are they are good playmakers, and they aren't first or arguably second line players. What is the point? It seems to be basically attempting to pointlessly "win" a trade value wise without taking into account salary or team needs. If we made this trade we would pretty much not be able to do anything else this offseason to address more important issues with this team unless someone wants to take Semin with no salary retained.

Kunitz is negative value, Sutter and a 4th barely makes up for it and in exchange we add a boatload of salary to a team in financial disaster.

This is a trade that a team like the Leafs would make since they can afford to take on salary dumps.

Yeah, you do that trade any day of the week and twice on sundays. Kunitz is a sniper who had a bad year. Yes he's getting old but he still raises our skill level, and possesses the skill we seem to lack. The skill to beat a goalie.

Could Wallmark be our 4th round savior and steal? Sure. I don't know if I would count on that.

Would we be a better team tomorrow with this deal? Of course we would, we would have more forward depth. It's true we need better d, but maybe these guys or others can be moved for better d.

remember last year when you guys were all like "stupid francis he's exactly like jr this was an unexciting same as jr draft"

i remember that

I think we were all pretty unanimous that this one was a good pick. The pick immediately in front of him however......

Wesley was the only suspect pick of that draft IMHO.

But yeah, loved the Wallmark pick then, still love it now. He probably could have gone late 2nd/early 3rd in 13 but fell because of his injury. It obviously didn't hamper him at all, and we're receiving all the benefits of it now. I think sending him back to the SEL for a year or as our #1 or 2 C in the AHL is probably the best option for his development, but if he can blow the doors off in training camp even better. And he does have the skillset to do just that.

Curious, I feel like I should know this answer for sure but I don't.

If Lucas plays in the AHL this year he burns a year of his ELC correct? But if he were to play another year in the SHL he wouldn't burn a year? Or am I wrong?

I think it counts as a year off his ELC either way. It's only if they're sent back to juniors that it wouldn't, and pretty sure Wallmark would be too old to qualify for that.

IMO we could use Sutter, as a way to relieve Jordan of some of the burden of being the main shutdown and PK center all of the time. It would make us a much harder road team to play against if we were rolling the two of them all the time, to say nothing of McClement. It would also allow Jordan to take offensive zone draws without fear of throwing our matchups out of whack, which in turn would help his production and make us better offensively.

We could use Kunitz for depth, but not at that salary figure.
