I agree, it's hard to be negative about this signing. But the things that are being said right now are roughly the same things that were being said about the Josef Melichar signing. And one person slots Komisarek in as the seventh defenseman. And one thinks the biggest plus is that it means Corvo won't be back.

All that said, obviously we weren't going to move the needle much today, and this move doesn't move the needle much, if at all.

Bottom line, if you thought shoring up seventh d-man was a key for the Canes, we had a good day today.

Like this signing a lot. Low risk, possible high reward. He'll have a lot to prove.

Now if we could somewhere get a back up goalie, I might call it a success

Very good low risk signing to boost the defense and the overall toughness of the team. I like it.

so who doesn't make opening day roster now?

Bellemore or Murphy?

I think if you want to keep 7 on the roster and Komisarek shows enough to make the Top 6, Murphy goes down and Bellemore stays up. Once you talk about who you actually want to play, it gets a little more tricky. Murphy needs professional minutes. Bellemore has them already.

A 700k Komi insurance policy sure beats a 2m Uh-Oh Corvo insurance policy.

At best, JR hits a home run here and Komi returns to form. If not, then it isn't a lot out of pocket and he serves as injury insurance.

Absolutely love this signing. I can't believe he didn't have a better offer than $700k at one year. I would have thought there'd be several decent teams offering him a mil at 2 years and maybe even one GM offering $1.5 for 3 years. This is an outright steal.

I'd love a backup goalie but won't expect us to make any more moves today. I'm just scared we'll be 4 points above 8th with 2 weeks to go into the season, Ward will pull a muscle, and we'll get Petersed into 9th place.

He probably did have better offers. But he took a look at our defense and figured he'd play here, and probably nowhere else in the NHL. Our brutal defense worked in our favor on this one.

That, and the NMC guarantees he won't be stashed away in the minors to get his cap hit off the books. That job security may have tipped the balance.

I'm ok with this. Most people seem to think he wouldn't return to the NHL, kind of like Semin last year, only Komi isn't going to be making $7 mill. Hopefully this works out but if not at least it's not a Tomas Kaberle situation.

Now if JR could get us a decent back-up goalie since Ellis is gone.

Spoke to Muller. Past relationship in MTL huge factor. Utilized in right fashion Komisarek should bolster depth on D. #fitforboth

Guess that answers my question about Muller and Komisarek's past relationship being a factor.

Rather see Murphy in Charlotte for a year (or until someone is hurt), but we know Murphy is on this team.

They will keep 6 dmen on the roster and I expect Komi and Murphy and randomly Harrison will flip being scratched. Komi obviously in against bigger tougher teams and Murphy in against faster teams.

NTC/NMC isn't such a concern with such a low $ amount. We basically are paying a NTC in place of cash. The other NTCs we have on this team are players who received market value or above in some cases plus they are resigns where sometimes you'd even expect a discount.

This signing is perfect. The price the player none of it negative. Im glad we are going after the d side of the game instead of signing pointless forwards.

Who is a happy and excited Canes fan right now...THIS GUY!!

Great signing. Anything 1 mill and under was what I was hoping for, 700k is a bargain. Komi will be a good 6/7 d-man. Only thing I'm worried about is having 5 LH d-men in the line up if it's Murphy he's replacing.

Komi's a RHD. We should have at least 2 RHD in the lineup most of the time.
