Didn't see this one coming. He's been pretty bad but a low risk gamble. Wondering if this is a 2-way? If not then Gardiner must be on the move sooner rather than later

So Gardiner probably isn’t being moved for a similarly priced D. Also not for a similarly priced G since they signed 2.

What forwards remain who could be a close swap for Gardiner?

Everyone keeps talking about Tarasenko but....What about to Boston in a DeBrusk deal 50% retained? We have the prospects to toss in. They need more defense too.

seems like a poor man's TVR?

No, Smith is an offensive defenseman who never progressed enough to produce enough offense to make up for his lack of defense. Got traded to the Rangers at the deadline and had a good run with them that half year. Then they way overpaid based on that half year. He got married that same summer and came into camp way out of shape.

He played 4th line wing with both the Wings and Rangers on rare occasions.

I think Smith played the right side with Skjei during Skjei’s rookie season. If so, there’s some versatility there. I’m a little bummed it seems like they won’t be giving Keane/Sellgren a shot at the 7D this year, oh well.

Gardiner must be heading bye-bye soon
