Cam Ward is a Hurricanes legend who spent most of his career playing without an adequate back up and/or behind an AHL defense. History won’t remember him as kindly as it should, but if his jersey hits the rafters it certainly won’t be for lack of skill.

This. So much this. My wife said a few years ago (And she's no analyst by far) Cam looks exhausted, and he has for years. He looks tired out there. He has no help, the defense constantly leaves him out to dry and all the other goalies suck so he gets no rest. Why don't they help him?

And she wasn't wrong. Ward in his prime behind the defense we have today, would be Vezina Ward. Sorry, but it's true.

Cam played in 74 games in 2010-2011. Wanna know how many NHL goalies have played in 74 games since then? That would be none. Cam hit the ice for 68 the next year. He had a 69 game season before that. He was ridden into the ice.

I had to unfollow her because she likes to tweet something controversial or that she knows people are gonna give push back on and then an hour later complains about being attacked or people saying mean things to her. Got tired of it filling up my feed. Still ill check her feed for news.

He faced a ludicrous amount of rubber, too. For the 10-11 and 11-12 seasons he had 4518 shots against.

I believe he also put up a combined .918 SV% during those two years as well. As I said on the main board, he was really starting to find his game before the injuries hit him.

Even through all the ups and downs in his career, I always felt better with Ward in net than any other goalie. Even Mrazek hasn’t provided that level of comfort that Ward did on most nights. Hopefully that changes as he plays for us more, but at the moment, it is what it is.

I’m hoping they retire his number. I’ll be at that game, just like I was there for Brindamour’s, Francis’ and Wesley’s.

It really is a shame the injuries hit when they did. He was a noticeably better goalie before about 2012. After that it was like he'd get right up to the cusp of his old self, and something would happen -- a bad goal, an injury tweak, a team meltdown. Something always spoiled it, right when you were thinking he was getting back to peak form.

Peak Ward was pretty damn good, though. Put that guy behind our current defense and he'd be a world beater.

Listening to cam on 99.9 the fan. Sounds like he really wants to get into coaching. Said he told the team hes here and available if they would like him for something. Said he will probably be attending games with his family. Hes selling his old house and is building a new house/"forever home". Hes going to do more with his winery with Tim Gleason. Those were the main points.

I worked the numbers years ago and the additional shots Cam was playing was like another 10 games worth of work over the other “elite” goalie each full year. Not only was he playing tons of games, he was working harder to do it

Nah, but Cam did jam the same amount of work into six months. Whereas, goalies who made the playoffs could stretch the workload out over eight months.
