TheAHL.com Have we given up on this guy? he is 6'4 225 with 1 year in charlotte 16g 9a even +/-
He's got a long ways to go. About a handful of prospects ahead of him on the depth as of now. I think if he wants to make it in the NHL it's going to be as a bottom 6 guy. He's apparently one of the no toolbox type of players unfortunately.

I think you give him one more year. But he’s never looked great compared to his peer group, and he turns 21 this season. Meaning that whatever he accomplishes this year, that’s what you get coming into his age 22 season. So it had better be a lot. Because nobody has much time for a 22 year old who’s been puttering around as an unexceptional AHL’er.

He was always a question mark, he didn’t look to have more than third liner skill when we drafted him. He’s straight line fast but very little lateral movement, a bit awkward on his skates. A good shooter when he can get the shot off using that 7 ft stick of his. I imagined Dmen gapping up on him quick once he hits the blue line make his life pretty miserable. Just doesn’t get the space he got in junior, and it’s a little more difficult to just run them over.

What's up guys and gals, just a roving Leafs fan looking for a little info on your 2016 3rd rounder Hudson Elynuik. Cursory glance at his stats look pretty solid and he's massive, so for y'all not to sign him he must have some fundamental problems in his game right? Any info is appreciated

he was actually trending pretty well. think he just misplayed his hand when offered an ELC by Carolina. he saw the depth at Charlotte and didn't want to be shuffled off to the ECHL. so in essence it was his decision to not sign the ELC and go through another draft, instead of Carolina not offering him.

With the de Haan signing, the D seems set for quite some time.

LHD--Slavin, de Haan, Fleury, Carrick, Bean
RHD--Pesce, Hamilton, Faulk (for now), TVR, Martin, Fox, McKeown

Even if Faulk is moved, the right side looks deep for the foreseeable future. At least two have offensive upside: Fox, Bean. Martin looks to be much like Pesce. If de Haan can stay healthy the next two seasons, the D might actually get better by 2020.

I was skeptical of the new front office. But they have done a good job acquiring Hamilton, de Haan, and Fox. Now if they can get an established forward to join the rookies (especially if Brind'Amour is committed to pairing Necas and Svechnikov on one line), the Canes will be in excellent shape.

That makes sense, Toronto's farm team is weak up the middle so I guess there's more of an opportunity here. "Overplayed" is the right word there; doesn't seem smart to pass up a guaranteed NHL contract and yup here he is with just an AHL deal.

Thanks man.

Was he even offered an ELC by us? I know it came out that he was re-entering the draft but I'm not 100% we even really offered him.

My dad works with a guy who does quite a bit of scouting for the WHL. Said Elyniuk is a complete dick head, serious attitude problems. So it may be that the Canes never even offered him a contract if that's the case.

fair enough. I remember the reporting was something like "will not be signing" so with the news that he was re-entering the draft, I figured it was his call. could have gone in either direction. still, his production seemed fine enough to at least park him in Charlotte and see how it goes.

I vaguely remember something about us not offering him one. It was a blip on the radar months ago.

IMO he’s a decent pickup for the Leafs as a minor league depth guy, but I think we had enough looks at him to determine whether he had NHL upside. Other than being huge, the game just isn’t there. Character issues are news to me.

I just saw this today. It is a very in-depth review of the prospects at camp.

Canes & Coffee - Prospect Development Camp Notes

This is a nice little breakdown, but then I read this about De Jong:

He did not get badly beat or make any glaring mistakes over the course of the week or in the scrimmage

And end up wondering if we were watching the same camp. De Jong got absolutely lit up defensively because of his slow skating, and made a number of unforced errors with the puck. In one of the 2/3rds ice drills where the defenseman had to skate forward and then transition back to defend a 1-on-1, he repeatedly ended up so many steps behind that he couldn’t even influence the shot. Not quite sure how to take a long and detailed analysis that says these things didn’t happen.

When the de Jong pick happened I remember thinking there were 3 or 4 other dudes, both blueliners and forwards, that I'd have looked at a bit harder. In the various viewings I've had, he seems average at best.
