So MTL drafts a guy they hope can be as good as Ryan O'Reilly instead of trading for him.
What a clueless comment. The habs have several glaring holes on their roster. I'm talking on behalf of logic and not bergevin, but the habs clearly have to rebuild. ROR is what? 27 years old? He's likely on the downside of his career. Why would the habs trade a building block piece who has many years ahead for a player that's peaked? They're not even close to contending.

To have some semblance of having a real center so that when Jesper IS ready, we don't throw him to the wolves because he'd likely be out best C at that point ? Because nothing promotes development of players like a baptism of fire in hockey crazy montreal.

Plus its likely too late to try and change ROR to a winger, Kotkaniemi on the other hand..............

LOL The guy they draft I think they hope will be better than O'Reilly. O'Reilly is a second line center. A good player but that is it. Also the young guy you can have for a long time.

unless he follow in the steps of our PREVIOUS 3OA center and we try to turn him into a winger.

He's not making the club next year, when he does who shows him what it takes to be a NHL center ? Danault ? Drouin ? Paul Byron ? Or do we just throw him to the wolves because we have no other positional players that we can still try at center ?

And ROR is at worst a 1B center and we don't have a good track record of developing round 1 centers. if everything goes as well as it possibly can, Kotkaniemi MIGHT have a higher ceiling than ROR. When was the last time the team did everything right for multiple years in a row ? Whose to say we don't give drouin another kick at the cat as a pivot ?

young and cheap and falling into bottom six category is nothing to write home about. And if HE doesnt pan out we can just keep playing with the worst center depth in the league. maybe we can parlay this into a decade long run of having the worst center depth in hopes that one day, some day, a white horsed center will fall into out lap based on things which we cannot control.

The Future is more important than next freakin year.

Not trading a 3rd overall for a player who isn't going to get better. Habs are at least 3 years away from even being a playoff contender. Their prospect pool is trash. Their current roster is trash and they have several awful contracts. It's time to look at the big picture. ROR is a short term bandaid for the habs and nothing else.
