Kapanen isn't there because he's doing his military, which is mandatory in Finland, as it is in many countries in Europe.


Nitpick but the last part isn't really true, there are essentially only three western countries in Europe where conscription is mandatory for all male citizens and where there are no easy opt-outs: Finland, Greece & Switzerland. Austria also has a conscription system in place, but I've not heard of any Austrian athletes putting their careers on hold to complete their service, as only a small part of each age cohort get drafted anyway. Same goes for Sweden.

Kapanen is signed with KalPa until the end of 2023-2024 anyway so him missing the development camp or the training camp in September doesn't really mean too much. He's likely going to be competing for a spot as the 2C along with Aapeli Räsänen, but could end up being deployed as a winger too as KalPa is loaded with centermen while being much more weak on the right wing.
