Inquiring minds want to know... okay no one was inquiring and I'm just killing time.

With the 2020-21 season unclear and a real potential for a less balanced schedule where Canadian teams play each other more than usually. I thought it would be interesting to see how CDN teams vs the others.

The Winnipeg Jets were the 2020 "Canada Cup" winners with a 75% pt/g percentage, though the Canadiens were in excellent shape to win it had the balance of the season played out.

I've said it before, it would be great if the NHL played up non-divisional rivalries more. Kind of like how Soccer leagues have "Derbies" where something a little more than pride is on the line.

Does this information mean anything? No. Did it kill some time in my work day? Yes.

You do realise a derby is literally based on geography, right?

like, Man City/Man Utd, Liverpool/Everton, Southampton/Portsmouth, Ipswich/Norwich, Arsenal/Tottenham etc etc etc

I don't want to dump on the premise, but (at least around here) "derbies" are almost always between geographic rivals. The Juve-Inter, Barca-Real, or Bayern-BVB rivalries are more the exception than the norm.

And there's also nothing more on the line than pride (and the standard couple points). Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the idea?..

What's this? I see Montreal had more head to head points even though it had a lower pts%. Since that number fits my bias better, that's the one I'm going to make an unreasonable argument about.

Canada Cup winner was actually Montreal.

Yes I am aware, I'm simply noting that they get more attention than a regular match, even though they are part of the regular season schedule.

As most North American leagues don't have teams from the same cities a "Derby" wouldn't mean the exact same thing, which is why I falsely called it the Canada Cup. It's not just two teams would be the bigger flaw in the Derby comparison.

As a comparison the MLS has some unimportant cups MLS rivalry cups - Wikipedia, EX. Trillium Cup - Wikipedia - Toronto vs Columbus... Why? Because they have the same state/provincial flower. I'm sure the players don't play worrying if they will be Trillium Cup Champs or not. However while the games are being covered the Cup results get discussed by the media.

Do I think the NHL will ever do this? No. Do I think it is really important? No.

BUT as @njdevils1982 jokingly pointed out... Do I think that it could be marketed enough by Sportsnet and TSN to create content and hype. Yes, Yes I do. Whether additional revenue could be created from a Canada Cup, I don't know but I don't believe there would be a negative impact.

You realize, etc only has to be used once. It is the point of the abbreviation.

Finally a real banner, we should also retire all the numbers worn by the players this season!
