Zubrus on his first contract was good. Zubrus on his second contract was on par with Josefson. I'm pretty sure he was near dead last in the league in points per 60, before Jacob Josefson took that spot from him.

It wasn't really up until the last 10 or so years that we even gave UFA's more significant looks. Otherwise free agency was seldom a tool used to build our team aside from guys that were brought in as fillers and support.
