You can only protect either 10 skaters or 8 and given our Dcore unless there is a trade someone is gonna be exposed

7 Forwards 3 Def 1 G
Kane (NMC)
Toews (NMC)
DeBrincat
Strome
Nylander
Shaw
Hagel

Keith (NMC)
Seabrook (NMC)

That leaves two of Zadorov, Murphy and DeHaan exposed.

8 skaters 1 G

Strome
Kane
Toews
DeBrincat
Keith
Seabrook

Leaves one of Murphy, DeHaan, Zadorov exposed (along with Hagel, Nylander, Shaw among others)

Yes, the 'hawks can only protect 3 defensemen under the 7FWD/3D arrangement.

The other facet of that is each team needs to expose players who meet certain requirements:

Those are (taken from CapFriendly):
Minimum Exposure Requirements
Teams must expose a minimum number of players that meet the following criteria for selection in the upcoming Expansion Draft:
Position#Criteria
Forwards2
  • under contract in 2021-22, AND
  • played in 40 or more NHL games last season, OR
  • played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
Defense1
  • under contract in 2021-22, AND
  • played in 40 or more NHL games last season, OR
  • played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two seasons
Goalies1
  • under contract in 2021-22, OR
  • who’s contract is expiring & is an RFA in 2020-21

The games played has been prorated thank to the 'rona. However, that was key to being able to protect Murphy without having to preemptively resign someone on D. Murphy, until last game, was the only defensemen who met the exposure requirements of being signed into next season *and* played the appropriate amount of games. Zadorov Lindholm, and Carlsson's contracts expire at the end of the year. DeHaan, Carlsson, and Lindholm don't have the games played to meet that requirement. Since Bowey got his game, he meets that exposure requirement. Therefore, the 'hawks can protect Murph now...if they want to.

Virtanen is never going to be anything.

Dehann is having a rough season and is still a more valuable, useable asset.

If you want Virtanen, you make as well take a flier on Galchenyuk while you're at it. Both are basically being propped up by former draft position and not much else.

Basically all the deal was to lose cap next year off of de hann’s deal.

I'm not giving up on Dehaan for a reclamation project.

Even if he is having a rough season, he's been consistently good (when healthy, caveat) for long enough that him bouncing back and being worth his cap hit is more likely than him continuing to decline.

That’s fine
