players have self awareness of their own play. he probably knew he wasn't playing up to his contract here and knew that something might happen. we liked him, but we didn't like him at his number. I like the move. I think that he'll be a stabilizing presence for bear and coghlan as they try to figure that 3rd pairing out. my belief is they want offense out of that RD slot on the 3rd pair.
CDH wasn’t playing up to his contract here? He was excellent, then he got hurt. Odd take … second one in two days !!!

Granted, Pesce has a sweetheart deal. CDH made more than him. For that kind of money, the expectations were higher. It's why he's even available on a PTO right now. It went down hill pretty quickly for him.

CDH was the reason Slavin and Pesce could play together (as I recall it, anyway). He stabilized the 2nd line D. No one expected him to play anywhere but there, and there were no expectations of offense. I believe he played 74 games that year, and then hurt his shoulder.

That was year 1 of the deal. This coming year would be “year 5.” So yes, he is not as good as he once was.

I am surprised he doesn’t have a deal somewhere … but what do I know.

You can’t compare contracts like that. Pesce was an RFA and we scored big while CDH was a ufa which obviously comes with an inflated price.

CDH was at least to the level of his contract if not exceeding it the first year. He was our best defensive defenseman some nights.

A lot of good defensemen would have been relegated to the bottom pairing that year. Without putting too much thought into it, Slavin/Hamilton/Pesce/Faulk is among the deepest Top 4s leaguewide in recent memory; arguably, that’s 4 top pairing D in their primes.

de Haan, who was traded well before Faulk, would have been on the bottom pairing again in 19-20 and $4.55 mil is a lot for that. Plus, there were highly drafted prospects of that handedness on his heels (Fleury, Bean). In June 2019, getting out of his contract made sense.

The issue with CDH was his significant history of shoulder injuries. He was phenomenal for us all year then wrecked his shoulder again and missed most of the playoffs which hurt. Same shoulder he had 2 previous surgeries on. I don’t think we trusted it to hold up and it didn’t exactly... he had yet another surgery on it and missed a bunch of time with the Hawks. He still had a great year a couple years ago but yeah struggled last year (along with the entire team), hence a PTO now... I would absolutely be confident and comfortable with him on the left side of our 3rd pair, but yeah considering last year he’s likely not the same player he was for us 4 years ago. But I don’t think we need him to be. He’s an upgrade on Smith/Cole defensively which is all we need.

I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. I hated the way he was sent away after a year and I'm glad he's getting another look. I haven't followed him since he left, so I don't know if he's out of gas at this point, but I'm pulling for him.

I know it's sounding like I am dunking on CDH really hard, but his cap hit percentage at the time of signing that deal was not a good contract to give. we got out of it miraculously. he's an absolute placeholder and that's good for your 3rd pair but not for your top 4. he didn't offer much of substance. in a 3rd pairing role, just being himself would help this team a lot instead of being the top 4 that teams constantly want to improve upon. I like him a lot and he's a good dude, but he got a deal too large.

He played 12 of 15 playoff games that year playing mainly 15-17 min per game.

I don’t disagree with the overall concerns about his shoulder injuries though.

Vagrant now vs. Vagrant at the time of the signing in 2018. Sorry, couldn't resist.

fantastic signing. de haan is constantly among the league leaders in blocked shots, isn't afraid of the physical game, and moves the puck incredibly well. he's going to fit right in here. the concern about losing offense when we trade faulk should be mitigated by the fact that being able to advance the puck is a form of offense creation as well and each of our options can do that with various degrees of competency. offensive creation is more than counting stats and we can't really call slavin, pesce, van riemsdyk, and de haan traditional "defensive defensemen" in the same way you'd classify brooks orpik. these new type of hybrid defenders that can make breakout passes and score the odd goal are just as important to advancing your offense as the guys who can freewheel and go coast to coast. plus, if we go 3 D and 1 F on the points of the pp we certainly have the horses to get that done. we could even potentially use hamilton on both pp units and allow him to play less on the kill to balance minutes. it seems unlikely we'd miss faulk considerably after this signing. now we just have to talk TVR into playing a lesser role for a couple of years when he justifiably could seek twenty minutes a night elsewhere if he was so inclined.

one thing is for certain. the goaltenders on this team will have no excuse that the guys in front of them let them down. this is the best defensive unit we've ever assembled and it's not even particularly close.

He’s the kind of player who used to get a contract by this time of year, before word got out that it’s cap-inefficient to run a team that way.

We’ll probably play against half a dozen rookie D this year who are on rosters because of their ELCs compared to signing De Haan as a UFA.

I’d assume by the time he got the PTO, he’d have happily accepted a $1-1.5m, 1 year deal …

He may still end up accepting something close if he has a good preseason. From us or someone else.

Or, it could really be a try out, with no offer eventually tendered. Depending on the amount of tread left on CDH's tires, I could see it coming down to him and Lajoie battling for the last D spot on the roster.

Not saying I think that will be the case, just that it could be.
