RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Callum Booth on a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will pay Booth $650,000 on the NHL level in the first and second years of the contract, and $700,000 in the third year. On the American Hockey League (AHL) level, he will be paid $65,000 in the first two years, and $67,500 in the third year. He receives a signing bonus of $225,000.

"Callum has continued to progress in his development and is one of the top goaltenders in the Quebec League," said Francis. "He has an opportunity to play an important role in our organization's future between the pipes."

Booth, 19, currently ranks first in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in wins (31) and save percentage (.911, minimum 10 games) and sixth in goals-against average (2.59, minimum 10 games). He was acquired by Saint John from Quebec in December, and was named Goaltender of the Week for the entire Canadian Hockey League on Tuesday after posting a 2-0-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average and .962 save percentage in two games for the Sea Dogs. He was the QMJHL's Goaltender of the Month for November, after going 5-1-1 with a 2.77 goals-against average and .926 save percentage for Quebec.

A fourth-round selection, 93rd overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft, Booth (6'4", 191 lbs.) is 81-58 with a 2.99 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in 152 career QMJHL games for Quebec and Saint John. Saint John currently sits atop of the QMJHL standings, and Booth's teammates with the Sea Dogs include fellow Hurricanes prospects Julien Gauthier and Spencer Smallman.

I think I'm going to yell "Boooooooootttthhhhh!" tonight every time Lack makes a save.

On the plus side, my voice should still be fresh after the game.

its going to be hard to consider Booth over ned because ned was a 2nd round pick. Booth was a 4th round pick. Yes booth has been more consistent but look at what team he is playing for. The saint john sea dogs. The #1 team. But the good thing about it is that he does have good connections with Gauthier and Smallman.

We might be wise to wait until any of the goalies proves something at least at the AHL level before we worry about who's the best with how hard they are to project.

He actually had better numbers this season before he got traded away from the Quebec Remparts.

The way Ned looks as a pro screams Mike Murphy. Undersized goalie of the year in OHL. Seive in the AHL. Booth could be the same way, but he doesn't have to rely solely on athleticism which makes him a "safer" prospect than Ned. Not that there is anything at all safe about goalie prospects.

We need to assume that ALL of our prospect goalies will fail and make changes at the NHL level by moving one of the two we currently have and try to find a real NHL solution this offseason. If either Ned or Booth or some other prospect jumps up to the NHL level, it won't be next year and they won't jump into the starters net anyway. They would need at least a year or two of backup work. Getting one of our prospects to play well at the NHL level within two years should be considered a luxury, not a plan. Ron needs to fix the problem at the NHL level with an NHL level solution.

Huh? how is draft position relevant, particularly when you get beyond the top of the 1st round? Jaccob Slavin was a 4th round pick and Ryan Murphy was a 1st round pick.

its going to be hard to consider Slavin over murphy because murphy was a 1st round pick. Slavin was a 4th round pick. Yes slavin has been more consistent but look at what team he is playing for. The carolina hurricanes. The #30 team. But the good thing about it is that he does have good connections with Pesce and Jesus.

i worded it wrong. I mean as in prospect wise. Yes you give a good example but the thing is most people still have ned as a better prospect. but yes the future is unpredictable. We took a risk on murphy then put him in the nhl to soon. It was our management's fault on ruining him. Slavin was give time to develop. Also ned looked extremely solid in net at the nhl level by getting a penalty, us killing it off, (getting on the scoreboard) and saved every shot. we haven't seen that with Booth yet.
