The Flyers are actually pretty thin on the blue line, all things considered, and there's no one ready to step in, even next season, to replace Sanheim. They have their seven guys and the eighth best option is one of the AHL lifers in Lehigh. The Flyers are probably not going to have a ton of cap space to sign anyone either in the offseason either.

Prior to the big prospects hitting the NHL, they were untouchable because of their upside and organizational philosophy. Now they're untouchable because they're all we have. Zamula and York are good prospects, but the 2021-22 season is probably when they'll be getting serious consideration for an NHL spot and that's being optimistic. Sanheim has been rolling shotgun with Braun on the second pair all year. If Kylington was a second pair defenseman, CGY wouldn't include him in this hypothetical deal. It would create a massive gap in the top four that took so long to materialize for PHI.

value may be there but need for the flyers is not. what hole is JG filling for them?
Fan service. The Flyers do have a need right now at LW, and may have one in the foreseeable future with the Lindblom diagnosis, but JG isn't really the answer, especially at that price.

Don't the flyers have Giroux, Farabee and JVR on the left side?

They've been bouncing Farabee around a bit, trying to find the right line for a lot of guys since the Lindblom diagnosis took away our best line. His scoring has also dried up for the most part. JvR has found himself in the doghouse for the majority of the season, spending an extended stretch on the fourth line. The goals have been coming recently, but Lindblom was incredibly effective on both sides of the puck

The flyers have no need to spend valuable assets for what would be their 2nd line LW, just to bump JVR to the third line. This deal makes minimal (borderline 0) logical sense for the flyers.
