losing Brodie for Tanev was awful though

Bad take, but this is one of those situations that could go either way for both players.
Giving goalies term well into their 30s is never a great idea, regardless of the goalie. I think Markstrom will continue his elite play for 2-3 season and then regress, but hopefully for Flames fans, he can still be at least an average goalie for the latter half of his contract.
I haven't watched Brodie much, but Tanev is still a very solid top 4 shutdown dman who is an absolute warrior in shot blocks. Whatever offence is lost from Brodie, he likely makes up for in defensive play.
