I don’t think this is much of a discussion. The rotation this last year was:

A: Kronwall
A: Abdelkader
A (Home): Larkin
A (Road): Nielsen

Remove Kronwall, promote Larkin, and process of elimination is really simple:

C: Larkin
A: Abdelkader
A: Nielsen

This is my expectation going into the year, and it works out well because there is no public display of stripping someone of a letter. Until Abdelkader or Nielsen play themself off the roster via trade or waivers, I expect this will remain constant.

Yzerman may not care about taking letters away.. If Thornton and Marleau can lose a letter, Abdelkader should not be safe. If it was my choice for letters...

I wouldn't be opposed to giving it to Bert/Mantha/ or AA.. Let's then know the franchise is invested in them, gives them a sense they are being rewarded to more of a leadership role for growing as players.

Green is UFA and more than likely TDL bait. If it goes to a D, DDK and Hronek are the only candidates, since none of the others (except Nemeth) are guaranteed to return for 2020.

goals ? dont make me laugh . 5 mil for 30 points every year has me crying . yes abs contracts bad but to me neilsem brings nothing i want on team = soft , low talent , perimter player that plays with zero tenacity . at least abs trys hard so the young guys can feed off that ,plus he brings some physicallity

Frans Nielsen was coming off a 52 point season.
Was one of the top free agents in a weak free agent class.
Reputation for solid 2-way play.
Penaltyshot specialist coming to team struggling with penalty shots.
Direct replacement for Stephen Weiss [4.9 mil x 5 years] with comparable term 5.25 mil x 6 years.
Keep in mind Weiss was a direct replacement for Filppula who signed a 5 mil x 5 year contract same offseason as Weiss.

It was more or less market value for his role at the time with the extra cost of added years due to weak FA class. Plus trade protection, big whoop, everyone on Detroit gets trade protection. Howard, Abdelkader, Green, Helm, Ericsson, de Kaiser, Daley. Pretty sure missing someone to boot.


Just be glad its not David Backes.

Abby and Nielson shouldnt really be considered because they are fringe NHLers at this point. It'd be weird to scratch or demote a captain.

Saying Nielson plays with zero tenacity is insane however.
