The Question is who is worth more. Marner,Matthews or Tavares. That is what Marners agent should be pushing during negotiations start.
Marner without JT would still be your top producer. The bigger question is what would JT be without Marner THIS SEASON?

Last season once Marner got away from Blowzak and JVR he was something like 1.2 ppg with Kadri and Marleau. I can assure you that Tavares and Marner would both have significantly more points if they had pretty well anyone other that Zack "stone hands" Hyman on the wing.

I`d assume Ristolainen would do very well on Torontos PP atleast and not having to log 25m+ would hopefully help him being better in his own zone . Maybe a deal around him makes sense?:

Buffalo gets:

- Nazem Kadri 4,5M
- Kasperi Kapanen RFA
- Nikita Zaitsev 4,5M

Toronto get:

- Rasmus Ristolainen 5,4M
- 5th 2019

Buffalo get 2 impact players in Kadri and Kapanen for taking on Zaitsevs contract. Toronto get much needed cap-relief ( around 7-8m in savings ) and upgrade their RD with a pp-specialist who has been struggling a bit eating too much minutes on a bad team.

Buffalo:

Skinner - Eichel - Reinhart
Sheary - Kadri - Nylander
Rodriques - Mittelstadt - Kapanen
Sobotka - Larsson - Thompson

Okposo traded in the offseason with a sweatener, Pominville off the books.

Toronto:

Zach Hyman-John Tavares-Mitch Marner
Andreas Johnsson-Auston Matthews-William Nylander
Patrick Marleau - Petan - Brown

Risto takes Zaitsevs Place on the 2nd pairing and PP1

Zaitsev is WAY better defensively than Risto, and cheaper, so No thank you!!!!!!
Zaitsev is actually the Leafs go to guy defensively, with Hainsey, and its Hainsey who is always causing Zaitsev to get out of position on blown coverages.
Its easy to jump on the hate train, but, watch the finer details, and re-evaluate.

He's not as bad as our rival team's fans percieve, but Risto isn't good enough for that package either.

I'd do Risto for Kadri straight up

It's like people dont realize that hes going to have a bad +/- because hes a top 4 D playing TopTen/TopFive TOI in the league not even simply #1 minutes. His D isnt that bad when he isnt worn down so fast.

Personally don't hate it as a Sabres fan. Team needs multiple top 6 forwards, and kapanen is a fair take back if we have to take Zaitzevs deal.

Its like people don't realize nobody uses +/- anymore. Risto is bad at pretty much every defensive metric there is.

There is no data to support your last sentence. Risto is good on the PK, the PP and in the offensive zone. He is terrible in his own zone at even strength. His zone exits are abominable. But, there is a very quality player in there with the right deployments and partner. If I trusted Sabres management at all, I’d prefer to keep him.

All that said, this package from Toronto is both too much, and also, because of Zaitsev, does not interest me.

Risto is on his way to his 4th straight 40+ point season. Zatsiev won't have close to 40 total between his last 2 seasons. "The same player":laugh::laugh:

Oh come on.. Risto plays significantly more minutes and Z doesn't get PP time like he did in his rookie year. He's asked to be a shutdown D which he isn't. If he put up 25 points as a rookie I am sure he could hit 40 playing PP1 minutes like Risto does.

And Risto isn't bumping Rielly off PP1 so this is really an upgrade on PP2 over Muzzin which is negligible offensively.

And when did he sign that contract? um
this past summer, after cap inflation, after he had been a top 5 scorer two years in a row
