I found out more about the illness today... it isn't terminal but Dorion will definitely take over sooner than expected. This "mystery trade" will likely be the last major move that he takes the active lead on, at least for a little while. For anyone who knows B. Murray this couldnt be happening to a nicer guy. I have full faith he will continue to lead a rich and happy life but unfortunately this might very well end his hockey career earlier than he had intended. What a terrible week this has been for the Ottawa community. I shouldnt say any more than this but I hope even those who disagree with his moves as a GM keep him in their thoughts.

I doubt that this is news to his family. Wonder if Murray was dealing with this before he signed his new contract?

:( Man, I've always loved the guy. Seemed to understand hockey brilliantly and had a great heart and compassion for the game. This is terrible news because I know that Murray wants nothing more than to win a cup and after Alfie, he's the guy I wanted to see raise it the most. I hope he still stays as "GM" and the boys support him with an amazing season and even a Cup. Nothing would be more perfect. Similar to how Chuck Pagano of the Colts got diagnosed and the Colts played unbelievably.

Bryan Murray has always had an amazing relationship with his players. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would say a bad word about him.

Get well soon Bryan.

Yeah, ok, fair enough.

Revised opinion: If Murray wanted Simmons to be the one to make this news public, then fine. Great. If not, then my previous statement applies.

He gave a shout out and best wishes to someone who is sick, how on earth is that a bad thing? If I was on the news one night and gave my best wishes to someone who was sick I doubt they would be upset about it. I also fail to see how it's wrong. I also don't see why it would be a big secret

five was meant to be competitive everything above that was suppose expect to make the playoffs. Now that i think about it people should probably ignore my options and just give him a grade out of ten based on there own opinion of what the numbers mean. mybe just scrap the whole poll. it doesnt seem fair to be critical of someone in his condition.

I like this response. I've defended BM for so long now, maybe I'm seeing negative where there isn't, and my original response was harsher than it needed to be, sorry for that. One day BM won't be the GM anymore, and I for one will miss him. I hope it isn't any time soon. He isn't perfect, but he's made some good choices, and his heart is in a good place. You can see his passion for the game when the camera's are on him during games. I'm all over the place in this post, so I'll just end it with, I'm glad he's our GM.

It's not about the sickness being a secret. It's just drawing probably unwanted attention to BM. It's draining.

Unless BM wanted everyone to know and I'm sure if he did, he would have told everyone at any of the pressers he's done in the past few weeks, if not I don't see the point of having a 3rd party say it to the public through the media like that. It's unnecessary, even if it was meant to be a nice gesture.

Based on his tenure, a 5 or a 6, but I still have faith in BM. He always makes shrewd moves when the team needs it.

The shout out itself isn't a bad thing at all, quite the opposite in fact... It's whether or not Murray wanted it to be made public in the first place that is the issue.

I've spent lots of time in and out of hospitals as a kid, and I can tell you, there are a lot of people who prefer to fight their illness out of the public eye/ without a whole lot of attention. There's a certain kind of personality that would prefer a degree of anonymity when going through something like this. I'd hate to get ill, tell a friend of mine, and then have that friend break the news to my parents before I had a chance to do so myself.

Like I said before: the well-wishes are great in and of themselves, but Simmons can do that over the phone with Murray, in private. There's no reason to go public until Murray does... unless Murray gave it his blessing, that is.

Sorry to hear about this and wish him well obviously, but we've needed a fresh look and hand at the helm for a long time. Can't wait for Dorion to take over.

Yeah, also this.
There is a difference between average Joe and somebody who lives in the public eye. It is not news if you or I are sick but it is if you are a celebrity. Anything out of the norm is news concerning them.

The fact that it was a one liner at the end of a Tennis piece shows it wasn't being broadcast as huge story.

The fact that Members here brought it up and exposed the statement has made more people aware than anything.

BMurr has strengths and weaknesses. I love our drafting and player development. I think he and our scouts have an eye for talent.

He's been hot and cold in FA signings - Kovalev was terrible, Gonchar pretty good, MacArthur was fantastic. A lot in between - overall pretty solid in FA

Kinda the same in trades, great trade for Turris. Kinda got lucky we hit a home run on Lehner cause that Leclair trade sucked at face value. Very good trade to get Anderson. UNBELIEVABLE trade to move up for Karlsson. The Heater trade was meh, but Milan wasn't a bad piece to get I suppose. Spezza, jury is out.

imo, his big weakness is overvaluing "inventory players", guys that should be easily replaceable he keeps around (sometimes overpaid too) and we get a stagnant roster. In other words, our roster became overloaded with bottom 6 forwards and #5/6 D's. The impact last year was significant. My personal opinion is that we lost a promising player in DaCosta because we had no room and that's on Murray.

Worse than that, obviously something was rotten with the team. THREE stars have left and that's a terrible thing and has set us back. Sure, Heatley was on Clouston (hired by Murray) but I think if there was a championship culture in the organization these guys could overlook small problems and WANT to stay here, not leave. I assign blame for this 75% Melnyk, 25% BMurr. Murray's gotta fix it though, cause Eug won't.

No offense, but if DaCosta was all that promissing, he'd have an NHL contract. Anyone could have offered him a 1 way offer sheet for under 1 mil per year and no compensation would have been required. He just hasn't shown enough to merit a one way contract, and opted to try his luch elsewhere. That's on him, not Murray imo. That said, I really liked him, and still think he could be an NHL player, but imo, we have 4 better centers on the roster, and similar to better prospects at the position in Pageau, and Lazar. I wouldn't give up any of Legwand, Turris, Zibanejad, Smith, Pageau or Lazar to give him a shot, so I don't blame him for moving on.

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Bryan Murray has been recently diagnosed with cancer. The Senators organization issued the following statement:

“Mr. Murray is undergoing further testing and will begin treatment immediately for this condition as prescribed by the team’s doctors in collaboration with specialists.

Mr. Murray’s treatment schedule may require him to be away from the Senators office periodically. During his periodic absence, assistant general managers Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee will be responsible for managing the Ottawa Senators hockey operations department."

Terrible news no matter what you think of Bryan.

Edit: sorry just saw the other thread.

I agree completely. DaCosta's problem is that he can't consistently contribute enough offensively to stay in the top six, but doesn't play well enough defensively or play physically enough to be a bottom six guy. He's the ultimate "tweener", which is why Europe or the KHL is the ideal spot for him.
