The reason that the 5 year deal is a bit lower than expected is because it allows Brodie to become a UFA when he is still in his prime.

He gets the security of a big contract now, yet retains the ability to his UFA when he still has some prime years left.

That's actually really smart. Gives him more options later on. That's thinking ahead instead of going for the big contract now.

Just to note that Maloney/Treliving have signed great contracts with players in Phoenix/Arizona. They've always worked out great contracts so they could have extra cap.

Steal of a contract. Would have preferred a longer term even at a higher cap hit but this is still a pretty great contract.

believe in Burkliving!!

this will look like a damn steal by the 50 game mark.

I think a Brodie home jersey needs to be bought!!

Same. Doesn't matter if it's a steal in the next year or two because the Flames aren't going to be anywhere near the cap anyway. It'd have been nice if the value could've been extended a little further into what will be (we hope) the time period in which the team is competitive.

Adding 3 more years to the contract would have significantly cost more money as it would have covered 3 more prime years. Brodie would have given up becoming a UFA during his prime years, and a team has to pay for that.

What may be getting lost in all the hype of this signing is players now believe in this organization. When we can get deals like that signed you know players want to be here. What would of it cost the Oilers to keep him if they had him? My guess would have been 5years at 5.5. Go Flames!

According to Friedman, the breakdown of the contract is:

Y1: 3.25m
Y2: 5m
Y3: 5m
Y4: 5m
Y5: 5m
