Elliotte Friedman said on Sportsnet that flames and Brodie are trying worko on a deal. Friedman showed praise for Brodie.

Good to hear.

At or less than 6M on a long term deal (>6yrs) would be a steal.

Edit: Going to be interesting to see how much term Brodie gets. Burke on record saying he doesn't like long term contracts (don't believe he's ever gone above five years). Would expect Treliving to share the same mentality but five years would leave Brodie right in the middle of his prime.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: T.J. Brodie's extension with CGY not done yet but if/when it's done, expectation is it will likely be 5 years with AAV north of $4.5M.

What a sweetheart deal, he'd be a Flame until he's 30. And hopefully beyond as well. If he keeps improving he's going to get paid big time, hope the Flames have the cap space and a cup contender team at that point...

Would have preferred a max length deal with a higher cap hit but that's a pretty good deal too. Think they would be better off locking him through his prime rather than having to negotiate a new contract right in the middle of it.

I bet that's why Brodie didn't want to sign a longer term deal. He knows he's going to get PAID when he is ready for his next contract. It's a great deal from TJ's perspective. He has his long term future secured at the cost of having UFA status a few years later. But he still will only be 30 and can probably get another big 6 year deal when that time comes around.

Yeah, I can see that. Wouldn't be surprised if neither Brodie and his agent nor the Burliving wanted to go higher than five years.

Wishing the Hockey gods smile down on Calgary with a contract like:

5 years, 4.25m AAV

3.5/3.5/4.5/5.25/4.5 = 21.25m

Little lower in the last year as it's a contract UFA year and if Calgary really needs to or if something changes, he can be traded at the deadline without worry.

A man can dream.

Sportsnet casters was talking during the WPG game about contracts talks and a possible imminent deal being hammered out? They were chatting something like 5 years just over 4.5 mil or something.

The reason that the 5 year deal is a bit lower than expected is because it allows Brodie to become a UFA when he is still in his prime.

He gets the security of a big contract now, yet retains the ability to his UFA when he still has some prime years left.

Good deal for both sides, but a 5 years deal would likely bring the lowest possible cap hit for the Flames.

Adding 3 years likely adds quite a bit more for those years, and would mean that Brodie his UFA at an age not particularly advantageous to him.

Sop a good compromise all around.
