these callups are good for morale. the kids on two way deals get a nice fat check. spreading the wealth helps. good vibes abound (unlike our last two coaches). stop making something out of nothing

Shit i forgot he made it last season. But was he still considered a rookie since he played in the AHL during covid times?

Per the AHL’s By-Laws:

To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in a total of twenty-five (25) or more AHL and/or NHL regular-season games in any preceding seasons, nor in six (6) or more AHL and/or NHL regular-season games in each of any two preceding seasons, nor in one hundred (100) regular-season games in any European Elite League. A player who has met these qualifications but did so while playing on an amateur try-out agreement or as a signed junior will not have those games count towards his rookie status. Any player at least twenty-six (26) years of age (by Sept. 15 of that season) is not considered a rookie.

Yikes how many of them couldn't be NHL regulars? Always liked Witehall.

Mottau couldn't get into Rangers but yet played for a bunch of teams. Ryan Graves Rangers didn't like him for any reason to give him some games in the NHL. Bobby Sanguinetti bust, Montoya played on some random teams but a bust. Joey Keane turned into Gauthier via trade so that's a win although Gauthier sucks.

I think the biggest pitfall here is to look at this and judge it as a barometer for success

Let's not forget that the Rangers historically have been god awful at developing talent properly, and the Hartford Wolf Pack has been known as a prospect graveyard for over 2 decades now.

Savard, Tyutin, Callahan, Miller and Shestyorkin though....

Dubinsky, McDonagh also played some games for the Pack or Whale, same with Fast

No one liked Witehall. Talk about a dark ages prospect, LOL.

Shame about Bobby. He had size, speed and a shot. In fact he won the AHL Hardest Shot and Fastest skater competitions.

It's wild to me that people could think bringing a kid up for a couple games is somehow going to derail his development. Think of what we're saying here? The kid went from playing in Hartford, CT to missing a game or two to play in MSG, literally an hour and a half drive away.

There are so many more consequential things that happen in life, especially for these guys who have been traveling all over the world to play hockey much of their lives.

Giving a kid a few games, mid-season, to show him what life will be like here is motivating. It's a good thing. There is zero harm in doing that unless he is the most mentally weak person on earth.

This is not similar to Krav or Lias who both had absurd egos and refused to put in the work at a lower level to develop. Had they taken the time to try and acclimate to the NA game with the Pack, they may be in a much different place now. Instead they're both out of the league. Othmann has nothing in common with them and has fully embraced his development and by all accounts is enjoying his time in Hartford.

Hear hear! I would like to add that there's a huge misconception that players magically stop developing once they're in the NHL. Cuylle today is better than he was in October. Playing at this level helped him develop. Same with Othmann once he's called up again.

Spending time with elite players, the Rangers coaching staff, having access to NHL-level equipment and facilities, helps tremendously. And let's not forget the mental aspect of it. Rewarding Othmann for the strides he's made, gives him a huge boost and motivates him to continue on this trajectory.
