Any hints as to where he'll sign?

Can he sign on July 1st, or is this another scenario where he has to wait until August?

Could be DET if they are able to move Mrazek or even if not. Just got done playing with Blashill and Howard at WCS.. and they need a younger G...

If I were George McPhee, I would push hard to sign him for Vegas. He can stay in Chicago and play for 2 years and then when Vegas either lets Fluery or Picard go and he can move into the back-up roll and eventually take the number 1 spot.

Would have to think they're looking into it for sure.

He's signing in Chicago, he's been at Notre Dame and is from that area. Moving on. Vesey and now him, though I don't fault Vesey per say.

Yeah look, Veey passed up signing with Nashville and we know how god awful they were this year. Plus he passed up a roster spot on last years Preds playoff team too. Brilliant move to get the exact same money.

With the Rags trading Raanta, and Halverson and Skapski seemingly regressing in the minors, I could see NYR being in play, too. They like going this route for free assets.

huh? he's not signing because he's buried on their depth chart. He wants to play in at least the AHL.

The plan in Buffalo was him playing full time in the AHL this year

Lehner and Ullmark are Sabres goalies

with a new GM not tied to Lehner all bets are off on who could be goalie in 18/19

That is one of the best opportunities out there

Had he signed with buffalo pre expansion draft they would have protected Carrier and Vegas likely take Ullmark--then it would have been just him and Lehner in 18/19 to compete.

Hard to fault the players for using a loophole in the system to control where they play.

Really it should be on the league to close this loophole.

As a Sabres fan who is losing a good prospect, this saddens me, but it is not a loophole. This is how it is supposed to work.

People over-rate the whole hometown thing.

College FAs are going to go where they have the best chance to break into the NHL. That's really what matters to most of them and you can't blame them.

They should just expand the draft pick compensation, it's silly if a 1st rounder does it, the league gives you a 2nd round pick. But there is no continuation of that type of compensation for some reason.

Disagree. Look where a lot of these kids sign. It's either where they grew up, with a teammate from college or near where they played college.

And KHayes signed with NYR instead of Chicago the year the Hawks won a cup.

That was not the plan at all because if they signed him...they would have lost Ullmark. The plan was to keep ullmark and not sign him.

their GM just resigned a prospect and made a trade with vegas to ensure he didn't lose him to the expansion draft...if that's not a sign of belief then I don't know what is...

Botterill gave it one last ditch effort yesterday but he has known for a while now that Peterson was not signing in Buffalo. From all accounts that was a huge reason why he left Carrier exposed and traded a pick to Vegas - because they could not afford to lose Ullmark too.

Ullmark and Peteraon were the top 2 goalies on the Sabres prospect depth chart. They couldn't lose both in such a short period of time.

It's the same reason they limit the compensation to 1st rounders for CHL and all other non-NCAA players as well. Don't want to create an environment where teams may start intentionally not signing lower round picks because they'd prefer the compensation pick instead.

That's easy. Make them make an official max rookie contract offer that is refused before they can get compensation.

Teams don't get anything back if they refuse to sign a prospect. If a Team on the other side wants to sign a prospect but the Player refuses due to this loophole (yes it is for me) the Team should get compensation. Ideally, the Team that signs said Player has to give the Team that drafted him a Pick back (1 round lower than he was drafted)

It makes no sense to see a 1st round NCAA Player refusing and entering the Free Agency to get compensated with a 2nd round pick while you get nothing if a 2nd round NCAA Player does the same. It's stupid.
