What a great story Alex was last season. It’s his to tell one day, but a lot of perseverance, and many new hockey doors opened to him in the coming years. He’s a perfect example of how this CBA is aging-out good hockey players at younger ages. He could make a documentary about it at this point.

He was looking for this type of a situation, instead of the standard 2-way deals he’s been offered, to basically become an AHL veteran. He wanted that chance to be a team’s 12th, 13th, 14th forward, to spend the year in the NHL, making NHL money.

Last I heard he was talking to Vegas the most about a PTO. Hadn’t heard Boston, but it’s the same situation he was looking for. So good for him. If he makes it, he gets that opportunity he was after.. Way ahead of last year at this time.

He was a very unique player last season. Instead of being traded on “Deadline Day” he actually signed an NHL contract with Detroit that day. They needed warm bodies because of injuries and players traded at the deadline, and he had earned a ton of respect throughout last summer, being part of training sessions run in Michigan for NHL, former college/CHL players. Then accepting a deal from Horcoff to play in Grand Rapids as a mentor, after an injury messed up his PTO with Arizona…. All with no promises of an NHL contract. He did get it on Deadline Day though, and he didn’t disappoint.

He actually did better than most deadline day acquisitions… 6 goals and 9 points in 20 games. He gave Detroit something Boston is going to need some of. That net front presence on one of their PP units, and good play (down low) along the walls to maintain possession on the PP. They lost some of that this off-season, and he’s very good at both. He can also still give you an honest shift on the 4th line.

He’s the type of guy you root for. Hopefully he earns this shot in Boston. It’s actually a good fit for him.

Feels like at this point he's just there for a longshot at a roster that seems pretty cluttered with cheap depth already.

But as mentioned previously, his biggest utility might just be as random preseason body who can count toward the vet minimum, especially for split squad games or anything like that.

Year in year out he can't get a contract, then signs a pto in August and is on the top line opening night

Definitely shocking that he wasn't able to maintain a 46.2% shooting percentage.

Any word on whether Chiasson has alligator blood?
No, but I heard he disassembles Oreos before eating them.

It’s not just random. It really isn’t. Teams took note of what he did this spring, and want to make sure it wasn’t some crazy, aligning of the planets fluke moment in the matrix.. He had plenty of PTO interest because of those 20 games.

Chiasson took the last couple of summers and concentrated on being a net front presence on the PP, hoping to give himself an advantage over other players in his situation.. Aging Out.. It was absolutely a calculated strategy to keep his chances of getting an NHL contract every summer, and it looks like it may have worked.

He’s not just a plug for the preseason. It’s a 100% legit PTO.

He’s now become a specialist. That was his intent. It’s actually fun to watch. The Bruins will want to make sure he can still do what he was doing this past spring, and if they feel he can, he’s likely in the lineup most nights.. He will not hurt a team being the 12th forward, but it’s what he can do on the Power Play that intrigues teams. Not only with the goals, but he also keeps possession down low on the PP. On the walls, etc.

In 20 games, post trade deadline last season, he was one of the best net front presence players (on the PP) in the NHL. That’s not easy to do. It’s crazy. Guy barely plays 5-6 minutes a night, but come the PP, you’d have thought he was a star out there.

If the Bruins think he can still do this, and it wasn’t some fluke… he’s a Bruin this year.

I mean they already signed JVR for that role.

Has kinda felt inevitable that someday he would be a Bruin. Adds some competition for bottom six RW, but would be disappointing if he made the roster.
He would be better off going to a team with a lot of speed but do the bruins really need yet another slow old forward?

coaches and teammates love this guy. he's a true test for a gm's roster depth. for all the supersmart reasons gms put various guys on a roster in various roles trying to build a cohesive unit, somehow chiasson, as a not good at anything but competent at most things player, always outplays enough of them to deserve to dress. he works his way from pto into fill in on the top 6 everywhere he goes then management notices and demands he gets demoted, rinse, repeat..

A few surprises in training camp this year(Lucky us lol), Bruins are gonna be a lot better than most realize. A step back(obviously) but very well alive in the playoff fight.
