CBS pledges 'Survivor,' 'Big Brother' casts will now be 50 percent people of color
"CBS announced a new diversity pledge Monday that will have a visible impact on its staple of reality shows: All future casts will contain at least 50 percent Black, indigenous and people of color."
Straight from the company. Now it doesn't mean 50% black. "People of colour" could mean black, latino, asian, arab, indigenous, etc. But that's the mandate moving forward. And if you look at this year's cast, out of the 16 contestants you had technically 8 "people of colour" when you factor the Cookout + Derek X and Alyssa.
The problem with that is you're looking at roughly 75% of the United States identifying as "white alone" according to the U.S. Census Bureau, so you'd be looking at 12 of the 16 houseguests being white. That's what has happened in the past, and it's why CBS has caught a lot of flak for not catering to populations outside of the "white only" population.Yeesh, way to bend over, CBS. How about picking people using the actual population percentages?
