Does anyone bet real money on the NHL? I was checking it out, I don't know how betting world, don't know squat about, if anyone has the time, can you please what + and - mean? I tried researching online but nothing that is easy to understand comes up.

I bet on hockey fairly often. the +/- you are referring to is what is known as American odds. +500 means if I bet 100 bucks, I would win 500. -500 means, If I bet 500 bucks, I would win 100. A classic gambling line referred to as even odds is -110 on both sides (this is how bookies make money, the 10% is referred to as juice). I hope this clears some stuff up for you.

Wanted to make 3 bets last season. 20/1 odds Kane Art Ross, 20/1 Panarin Calder, and 7/1 Hawks Stanley Cup. I never did it... Sucks.

yes i do

but i learned to never bet on regular season hockey.

so many players take reg season games off, not worth having money on the line.

playoffs though, I put big bets down on pittsburgh and st louis at the beginning of round 1 (my 2 dogs to win the cup)

last year i bet on chicago > TBL in the SCF. Thought it was obvious chicago would win, it was a bit scary after game 3 but was still fairly obvious chicago was controlling the pace of the games.

hockey is pretty predictable

- (minus) means favorite
+ (plus) means dog

+200 means if you bet 100 you will win 200
-500 means if you bet 500 you will win 100

but i warn you..

I beg to differ.

If the betting lines in hockey are set properly, all gains are funded by other gamblers' losses.

If you've discovered some sort of magic arbitrage, I'd suggest taking advantage now before someone else finds it, too.

Good portions of those fancy casinos are built on the fact that sports aren't "pretty predictable".

I prefer using Draft Kings and doing the 50/50. I have a bit of a system in place that has been successful over the last two years. While most people look to pick players who are hot I look for players who are due.

Also if you are betting always make sure you use this site

http://scoutingtherefs.com/category/tonights-officials/

I use to have games ruined because of Peel and others like him now I know to stay away from them.

Also tips "HOME TEAM MATTERS" in betting last change also the team generally does play better in there own barn. Also look at teams that are on long road trips its toiling on the body as well as teams playing back to backs who went to OT there legs will definitley give out most of the time.

Also if you plays games like draft kings stay away if two defense first teams play each other AKA Anaheim and Washington last year.

On draft kings I just look at the players last bit of games. It always lists the last ten anyways. You may get a time where Crosby has had one point over his last four games played. Statically speaking he will be due to get points seeing as he is an over point per game player. While someone may see a Patrick Kane who has had six points over his last four games. He will not keep that pace up and is due for a pointless game.

Also I look for players who have been on a cold streak. Look for players like a Gaborik who has only had two points over his last ten games. Now he is a better player than that and should be due.

One last thing is to use leftwinglock.com. It lists teams starting goalies and lines. Now lines can always change during the game but if you know a certain young player is getting top six minutes the next game they are worth a value pick.

You can explain it as many times as you'd like; it's still called the gambler's fallacy for a reason.

It doesn't stand up to statistical scrutiny.

I bet all the time. But never on Canucks games.

I find my heart gets in the way and you aren't a fan if you bet against your team. So I just bet on other teams.

I used to be quite a bit and was decent at it but lemme tell ya, I honestly think hockey is the most difficult sport to bet on.

DO NOT BET ON REGULAR SEASON HOCKEY[/QUOTE]

i beg to differ, I have paid off my car in 5 days of betting $100 on 6 parlays 5 days in a row (middle of november)

and bought a $2k smart tv 60 inch when they first came out with only betting singles for 5 days of when i first started betting nhl games in 2013.

I have a excel sheet i made of how much im betting, how much of a parlay picks i did, how much i won.
It also has all 30 nhl teams, with all 82 games each, and it tracks the wins (green) loss (red) overtime loss (blue) and i can track trends and such of my own

I also like draft kings.

Just make sure you pick a hot goalie.

I don't like single games, teams trend to take nights off without notice.

You can talk about the topic, but don't talk about specific sites for gambling.

Ok first of all, do not ever bet money that you aren't comfortable losing. Ok.... so it's never comfortable to lose money, but I think my point is obvious. Don't bet money you need to pay your bills. Don't chase your losses. If you lose, don't go betting bigger and bigger trying to get your loss back as fast as you can. You can get yourself in a huge hole very quickly. All sports are frustratingly unpredictable. Games and totals that seem like a sure thing lose all the time. I know from years of experience. Stay disciplined with your betting. This hobby can humble you and your wallet in a hurry.

With that said, it's a hell of a lot of fun when you're winning. As long as you're responsible and don't lose more than you can afford to lose, I really do just consider this a fun hobby that is occasionally extremely rewarding (I won $600 today on Canada beating the spread against Czech :naughty:).

Be weary of heavy favorites. A straight bet on the moneyline (winner) for a great team beating a bad team is going get you a very poor payout. As a hockey fan, you know it's not at all uncommon for very good teams to lose to bad teams. Just ask Sharks fans what their record is against Buffalo in recent years. Spoiler, it's bad... real bad. In my opinion it's only worth it if you parlay heavy favorites with another team or two (A parlay is when you combine two or more bets on one slip. They can have huge payouts but you have to be perfect. If you parlay six teams and get only one wrong, you lose).

Another thing to keep in mind, taking the spread in NHL games is a double edged sword. The spread is 99% of the time -1.5. This means if you pick the favorite at -1.5, they have to win by two or more goals. If you pick the underdog at +1.5, they can win the game or even lose by a goal and you still win your bet. Sounds nice but the payout isn't usually great. Anyway, the hard thing about spreads are those damn empty nets. What happens every single time towards the end of a close hockey game? The trailing team pulls their goalie. That empty net can make or break you very easily.

One good thing about hockey, as has been said, is it's not very popular and sometimes there are lines that are a little off and favor the educated hockey fan. Enjoy!
