2008 Red Wings are the best cap era team by pretty much every meaningful performance metric, including playoff success obviously.

Tampa (2020), Chicago (2013) and Pittsburgh (2016) are all in the conversation for 2nd

I've never seen a team like the 2013 Blackhawks. There was no stopping them.

Not the best measure obviously but the 2010 hawks went 16-6, 2013 hawks went 16-7. 2010 hawks had a WCF sweep and didn't play a game 7, 2013 hawks had no sweeps and were pushed to a game 7 by a not so great wings team. Being pushed to a game 7 and losing at least 1 game in every series seems more beatable than no game 7s and losing a game in 3 series.

07-08 Detroit
  • President’s Trophy
  • 1st in GA, 3rd in GF
  • Outshot opponents by 11/game in the regular season and 13/game in the playoffs. I cannot stress enough how insane those possession numbers are. You have to go back to the 70s to find a team that matches it.
  • 3 of the Top 10 players in the world in Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg
  • Their top 3 forwards, top 3 defensemen, and goalie were all playing at their peak levels (Franzen, Rafalski, Kronwall, and Osgood in addition to the aforementioned Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg.)

The 2010 Blackhawks didn't play a team as good as either the 2013 Kings or the 2013 Bruins though. Ironically, the best team they faced was the one they swept.

Given matchups of that quality, they probably take more games to win the cup.

Also, they were a bad Martin Erat play away from going down 3-1 to the Preds in round one.

As far as raw performance in the playoffs, the only area the 2010 Blackhawks actually performed better was the PP.

The 2013 Blackhawks had a better 5v5 CF% and All-sit CF%
The 2013 Blackhawks had a better 5v5 SF% and All-sit SF%
The 2013 Blackhawks had a better 5v5 xGF% and All-sit xGF%
The 2013 Blackhawks had a better 5v5 GF% and All-sit GF%

The 2013 Blackhawks also had a better Sv% and PK%

Whatever you think about the potential or raw talent on each roster, the simple fact is the 2013 Blackhawks out-performed the 2010 Blackhawks in a big way.

I'd take the 2007 Ducks over any of them.

I don't think the 2007 Ducks beat any of the following cup winners in a 7 game series:

2008 Red Wings
2010 Blackhawks
2012 Kings
2013 Blackhawks
2014 Kings
2016 Penguins
2020 Lightning
2021 Lightning

I think the Ducks are the wet dream of many #goodhockeymen because of their #grit or what have you, but I don't think they match up to any of those teams.

Just because they had grit doesn't mean they didn't have skill. Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermeyer were at their peak that year, and Teemu Selanne was still a 94-point player, not to mention all the other skilled players they had. Hell, even Travis Moen was scoring goals that year.

For one season? Probably one of those post lock out wings teams. The 06 wings had just a historic a season as the 19 lightning - 124 points compared to 128 points and managed to win 2 games in round one, whereas the lightning were swept. Surprised to see them get such low votes, the team that beat Crosby the first time was 16-6 in the PO.

Chicago's stretch of cups is likely the best of the three, but for one season I think the Wings edge them.

The thing with that 2006 team was that they had the benefit of the 3 worst teams in the West in their division and thus 24 pretty easy games. I think they went something like 21-1-2 or something like that. Then the Oilers exposed how soft and old that team was, and Legace wasn't going to cut the mustard in the playoffs.

That 2008 team was way better: Younger and faster, more grit/toughness, Rafalski > Schneider, Stuart giving them a legit top 4 D, and a bunch of guys hitting their stride just at the right time - especially Kronwall and Franzen.

There hasn't been a clear cut dominating team in the cap era tbh like we've seen in other sports. You could look at 7-8 teams and nitpick but the reality is, they're all in the same tier. I would say the '13 Hawks are the closest, but the shortened season impacts their legacy. Same with the recent Lightning winners. No one towers above the rest. It's why this is the 1000th thread on the topic and you have so many diff picks. It's the 07 Ducks, no it's the 08 Wings or someone else.

I don't see how people can say hawks or bolts over the wings. Bolts have been the best team the last couple years but have struggled heavily against the jackets and isles. The 08 wings struggled against no one, and played like they were a part of a different league than everyone else. 08 pens destroyed everyone in the east until they met the wings, who made them look like an ahl team. Advanced stats back this up too.

Yeah. People forget how good the 08 Penguins were in the playoffs before they got absolutely wrecked by the Wings.

I think the poll is confusing as worded.

Are to tell with those 3 teams, 12-13 Hawks had a 48 games so that could be a tie breaker.

That said a can imagine a team choosing one of them over the peak Ducks, matching wise.

Those mid 90s to late 2000s wings, when they had good goaltending were near perfect and that year Osgood played like an HOF and 43 year's old Hasek was the backup.
