OT: Best Fish and Chips in Metro Vancouver?

Back when I was was a young 'un growing up in Victoria in the 1950's and 60's quite often on Friday my father would bring home fish and chips from Haultain Fish and Chips. It is a Victoria institution and has been around since the 1920's - still going.
http://www.haultainfishandchips.com/index.html

In Metro Vancouver I have tried a number of fish and chip shops over the years. Some places had great fish but the chips were not great or great chips and fish that was not so good. Some places it looks like you are getting huge piece of fish but it was all batter.

Pajo's at Steveston was very good but has gone downhill a bit recently. Great setting.

Go Fish at 1505 W 1st Ave (False Creek Fishermens Wharf near Granville Island). has always been very good - the little fish shack that could...

For a sit down restaurant my recent choice has been Fish Café is located at 2053 West 41st Avenue in Kerrisdale.

A little more upscale and you can get your fish deep-fried or grilled.

However a new take out counter (and fish market) has opened on Main Street and it is now my go to fish and chip place. It is called The Fish Counter located at 3825 Main St. and these guys know seafood and shellfish and how to prepare it.

As they say:
We offer a selection of take out items like fish and chips, soups and chowders, fish tacos, and oyster po' boys. Our coolers are teeming with salsas, aioli, dips, spreads and broths in reusable mason jars. We have an ever-changing array of ready-made items to take home and heat up for busy families. Healthy, ocean-friendly and delicious.

The head chef (and co-owner) is Robert Clark (executive chef for a restaurant group including C, a high-end seafood restaurant) who has competed before on Iron Chef America - here his new restaurant is a little more down to earth.

I was tipped to the place by a some friends who know I like seafood and particularly fish and chips. One of my friends swears this is the best oyster po' boy he has eaten anywhere and his wife often buys the pre-made bouillabaisse broth and fresh fish and shell fish to take home to put together for a restaurant grade meal.

Another friend is addicted to the crab cakes and fish tacos. And maybe this is why.

The fish and chips are superb - you can get halibut, salmon, ling cod, Pacific cod, or oysters and chips. A really crisp beer batter, not too heavy or greasy and you can mix and match fish varieties with your order. The chips are similarly top notch.

Pajos was great when I was still around in Vancouver.

When the birds start to congregate around the area though, you better find cover unless you enjoy bird **** as topping.

Yeah...
Pajo's had gone down in quality.
I always find it too oily too.

I like Mr. Pickwicks off Granville and 70th.
It has a long history...
It is usually voted as one of the best in Vancouver...
And the fish and chips is not as oily as the other places.
I used to eat there more...
When there was the 98 B-line...
But I have not been there in a while now.

My go-to place is usually Finest at Sea. Solid fish and chips and conveniently within walking distance. Big fan of their sablefish.

http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/14/180622/restaurant/Arbutus-Ridge/Finest-at-Sea-Vancouver

Steveston generally has great fish and chips too, but the last time I went I left disappointed. The food was average and overpriced.

Meh...
I live in that area.
The only good food I find there is that Greek restaurant Kisamos...
Which has a cheap lunch menu...
And maybe Steveston Pizza.

I loved it when Windjammers was on Main Street about about 15th Avenue. One year I went there every (meatless) Friday for Lent and it was great because it's just a ten minute walk away. $12 for three large cod pieces and fries; that was awesome. They moved to somewhere on commercial and I don't know if it's the same owners but it's just not the same and it's far away.

Still on the hunt for cheap and filling fish and chips in the Mount Pleasant area. Lent is coming.

Wetcoaster what are your thoughts on Barb's?

As a former employee, I think it is severely overpriced and overrated due to its location (Fishermans Warf + walking distance from the cruise ships).

Had fun working there though.

Yeah, most will talk about Pajo's for fish. There is a Pajo's in my hometown of Port Coquitlam, at the old baseball diamond I used to play at during my first and only year of Bantam (I played 2nd base and right field, thank you very much). Good times there. Really good fries, I can't speak to the fish, I never ordered it but the poutine might be worth more than you pay for, I'd at least give it a shot. The vinegar and Pajo's seasoning salt was also a treat to. As a Riverside secondary alumni I haven't had better memories at lunch than going to Pajo's late-May getting fries and going for walks talking about what girls we'd want to dance with at commencement. Can't believe that was 5 years ago.

To those wondering, Pajo's at Bird Field in Poco is about a 2 minute walk from Riverside Secondary, making it a good healthy walk if you live downtown in the sun during early Summer in Poco. It's really rewarding just for the walk. The food is a bonus.

I'm sure it just goes back to my childhood families memories or something, but I love the fish and chips at Stanley Park.

Coney Island in White Rock is my family's favorite. Odd that they got busted for using catfish in place of cod a while ago, but I can't say I ever noticed it.

My go to place for fish and chips has always been Fishworks on Lonsdale in North Van. Always looking for new places to try, so thanks for the suggestions.

Personally, my go to fish and chips place is C-Lovers. I didn't realize they had so many locations here in metro Vancouver. I have a close friend that I've known for years that came over from England when he was young. His mom, dad and grandmother are still like hardcore English if that makes sense to anyone (thick accent, say things like bollix, rubbish and lift), and they swear by C-Lovers. They pick it up weekly and watch Coronation Street, LOL. :D

Pajos has a few locations and overall is quite good. Personally I find it a little over priced. They have locations right on the water, so I think you pay a little more for the experience. Great to have it when you're out and about near the water on a Sunny day.

Would love to hear some other suggestions because I love me some fish and chips!

A fish and chips thread is long overdue!
I've walked by Fish Market a bunch of times always wanting to try it out. I think I will now.
Thanks Wet!

I have never tried Barb's. Next time I am in Victoria I may check it out after looking at the website.

The White Spot is usually good but not great - their tempura batter is quite good. IIRC they also offer "endless fries".

The Spot’s Fish & Chips Combo
Our famous recipe. Two pieces of our crispy tempura battered cod. Served with coleslaw, fries & a soft drink. 12.49

Forgot about C-Lovers. Lots of locations.

I have friend in Coquitlam who regularly has the C-Lovers all-you can eat fish and chips.

All-You-Can-Eat Fish & Chips $11.99
Is now available every day & anytime!
New at C-Lovers!

All-You-Can-Eat Fish & Chips
… and a pint of beer! $14.99
Adults 11.99
Child 5.99 (age 4-10)
Toddler 2.99 (age 3 & under)

I went with him once and found the fish a little too oily but the fries were quite good. Also the fish is pollock for all you can eat IIRC.

Another all-you-can-eat place is Cockney Kings Fish & Chips on Monday to Wednesday for $9.99. I found it better than C-Lovers. They have two locations - Burnaby and New Westminster.

I grew up near Cockney King's and have great memories of bringing home fresh fish and chips in newspaper. Went back there on a nostalgic impulse about two months ago - found it pleasant but not up to Pajo's, and neither is a patch on the Fish Counter, which was raved about earlier in this thread and deserves the accolades. Great work there.

I'm trying to think of a good one that is not already cited here. Maybe the Fish House in Stanley Park, which is an upscale restaurant but used to provide an excellent potato chip/panko crusted halibut and chip dish...now only available on the kids' menu!!!

Great thread; I too remember Haultain's with some fondness. The Raintree Grill usually does a take out fish and chips during the summer that is pretty good. Agree that the Fish Counter is great not only for F&C but also for the oyster po' boy and the chowder. If you are ever in Ladner there is a place called Chung's F&C which is much better than anyplace in Steveson I have tried.

Dave's Fish and Chips in Steveston (Richmond).
First went there in the 1980's - quite good. Recently not so much. Terrible fries and the batter was way too greasy. The last time I had the halibut it was dry and chewy. And maybe the worst tartar sauce I have tasted in recent memory.

In Steveston I would go with Pajo's over Dave's.

Can't believe I had never heard of C-Lovers until wandering into this thread. I used to live real close to the Coquitlam location, now I'm about 40 minutes away from the closest restaurant. :(

Its Commercial and Venables I think. They were doing pretty well there and then now they are starting to get a little cheap on stuff. But not that bad for $5.00.

Wow I never knew they did all you can eat. I should try it out one of these days. Heard they have big pieces.
