• Meet total handle: More than $131 million was handled at the meet which closed May 23 according to figures released today. That is an increase of 687% over the $16.8 million last year.
Lone Star (Texas):

Santa Anita's
card for Saturday which includes the Santa Anita Derby (Kentucky Derby prep race):

Race 8 of 11 Approximate post time 4 p.m. PT
 1. Friar's Road—Geovanni Franco–124
 2. Rushie—Flavien Prat—124
 3. Shooters Shoot—Abel Cedillo—124

 5. Azul Coast—Umberto Rispoli—124
 6. Honor A.P.—Mike Smith–124
 7. Authentic—Drayden Van Dyke—124

I don't recall the last time I saw an 11-race card with single digit entries for each. The oddity that is 2020.

Cezanne, a 3-year-old colt who sold last March for $3.65 million, highest for a 2-year-old since The Green Monkey went for $16 million in 2006, is scheduled for his career debut in the sixth race Saturday at Santa Anita. Bob Baffert trains Cezanne, who breaks from the rail going six and one-half furlongs under Flavien Prat. Seven stakes are scheduled Saturday at Santa Anita including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and Hollywood Gold Cup. Source: Brad Free, DRF.com

Belmont (New York):
 • Handle: An opening day record for the spring/summer meet was established today when $10,972,254 was wagered including close to a $1,000,000 bet on track. Off track, $9,999,557 ($443 short of $10 million) was bet. The prior record was set in 2010.
 • Back in Action: New York had been dark since Aqueduct closed its meet in March 15.

 • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had one of his biggest win days ever going 8 5-2-0. A five-win day in the opener for the reigning Jockey of the Year in North America.
 • Javier Castellano, multiple winner of Jockey of the Year, was 4 2-1-1.
 • Chad Brown 3 2-0-0 won twice, no surprise there. He is the defending Trainer of the Year in North America.
 • Jorge Duarte, Jr. was a perfect 2 2-0-0. He doesn't go 2-for-2 too often. A quick search of his record shows the young trainer with just one other 2-win day at the same track and that was Monmouth.
 • Race 1: Racing...

 • Race 4: Too Fast to Pass, a Florida-bred, was retired after his 91st race. The 10-year-old suffered a slight injury. His first race was at Calder -- when it was called Calder -- in 2012.
 • Race 9: Rushing Fall (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes at 4-to-5. She was out for the first time since October, is an impressive 12 9-2-0 lifetime, snapped a 2-race skid and has earned over $2 million. She last won in June 2019.

Tampa Bay (Florida):
 • Race 3: Archivero won for the first time in more than two years and for the second time in 37 career starts. To paraphrase Fred Shero "It was his turn."
Gulfstream (Florida):
 • Race Day: All races were off the turf.
 • Race 10: A remarkable payday for someone as the $.50 Pick 5 returned over $127,000. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $11,000.
 • Races 7 and 8: The longest shots on the board won, though in reduced fields.
 • Rainbow Six: The carryover will be in excess of $1.37 million. The 'pot approached $2 million today.
 • Edgard Zayas won three times, all consecutive, among five starts.
 • Monica McGoey won with both starters. The trainer has under 25 lifetime wins.
 • Alfredo Velazquez, who moved his tack this week from the mid-Atlantic mostly Philadelphia, sent out two starters and won with one. He was based at Parx (by any other name) and other area tracks for more than 30 years as I recall. There is uncertainty in Pennsylvania, especially Philly, these days.

Well... the latest in the continued plight that is Illinois. There is a feeling that Churchill Downs has amended its stance to conduct a 30-day meet at Arlington this year without spectators. Various parties will meet on Friday. Churchill/Arlington could be leaning towards a spectatorless meet after all.

Also, construction on Hawthorne's $450 million sports betting facility has been delayed. The state still hasn't awarded licenses that were supposed to be granted in 2019.

Hawthorne and Arlington have been disagreeing as to the host track in the state if Arlington does not run and that means revenue which could fund purses.

Much to go but if Churchill does agree to run 30 days without spectators at Arlington, approvals through the state and horsemen still have to be met.

It's always something in Illinois.

Perry Outz just scored career victory 7,067. Outz, who will turn 66 on July 7, hadn't had a victory since last year at Belterra when he was injured in a post parade accident. Congrats Scoot and Boot!

Chantel Sutherland is riding at Belterra. She's 44-time flies. SoCal/Woodbine to Belterra is not indicative of an upwards career path trajectory-although I have no idea what her circumstances are. I thought that she had retired.

She spent much time In Louisiana in recent years. After dating Mike Smith, she was married and then divorced to a Canadian. I think following the separation she went to Fair Grounds (Louisiana) for a few years but she definitely rode the bush circuit for a while trying to resurrect her career and she had many mounts.

Kent Desormeaux tried the same last year after leaving Cali for Louisiana. He is Cajun, so it was a return going home but he didn't get the mounts and went to Golden Gate where he currently rides.

I wrote this in one of the reviews earlier this week at Gulf...
Race 9: Edgar Prado won for the 7,059th time. He is the 8th winningest rider in North America history. He is seven away from tying Perry Ouzts who is active.

@Cyclones Rock

I found this...interesting, she is now dating Corey Lanerie. Good! I hope he finds happiness after his wife's illness and eventual passing.

It looks like she may be based in Kentucky if not Ohio. If the latter, she will probably get more mounts depending on connections...'

Chantal Sutherland: Looking At a Bright Future After “Dark Times”

At the 2018 Fair Grounds meet Sutherland broke her left clavicle and fractured her right knee and tibia. The surgical repair and rehab sidelined her again for three months.

“I was doing great, but I’ve never been hurt as bad as I was then,” she said of the setback. “It took awhile to recover, and then it was pretty tough to get back in.”

Sutherland, who has ridden 90 horses and has seven wins with purses of $272,600 in 2020, rode She’sothewarpath for trainer Steve Margolis in the Tom Benson Memorial on the final day of racing this meet at the Fair Grounds on March 31.

Now at age 44 and still passionate about the game, she has moved her tack to Churchill Downs and is hoping to catch fire again even though the jockey colony is stacked with the best riders in North America.

“It’s hard because of the COVID-19 protocols. We have to get tested and have our temperature taken to come on the track in the mornings and we have to wear a mask,’’ Sutherland said. “Our agents can’t go on the backside, we can’t go from barn-to-barn and see the trainers.

We have to go back to our cars after we work a horse, and there are so many jockeys here. We had a social distancing birthday party at Robby Albarado’s farm the other night and we all talked about it.

“A few of the guys are really busy, but when it’s 52 jockeys deep and 45 of them are top riders, including 20 of the best in the world, it’s tough to get a mount. I’m a good jockey but there are a lot of good jockeys here. There’s just so many to choose from. I understand.”
Sutherland has been working horses for Margolis, Steve Asmussen, Kenny McPeek and Eddie Kenneally.

“If I were younger I would have gone somewhere else,’’ she said. “But I’m still getting calls to get on really good horses.”

During the first four days that Churchill was reopened this month, Sutherland didn’t have a mount, although she said Margolis has given her the return call of She’sonthewarpath in an upcoming graded stakes on the grass. She thinks that’s just the beginning.

“I know my ability and I know what I know (about race riding). With everything I’ve gone through I know that whoever I ride for, I’m going to do a great job,” she said.

There is plenty more she’s enthusiastic about. She’s in a committed relationship with jockey Corey Lanerie, who lost his wife Shantel to breast cancer two years ago, and they are raising his daughter, Brittlyn, 12, and are in the process of buying a home in Kentucky.

“I’m very grateful that Corey and I get along so well and that we’ve both had a new and fresh start. This whole COVID thing has brought us even closer together.

Thanks for the article. Bizarre that his deceased wife's name was Shantel.
According to a family friend, her death was caused by an infected colon that led to sepsis. After going into cardiac arrest, emergency surgery was performed Thursday to have most of the colon removed, but she never regained consciousness. The sepsis might have been brought on partially by the chemotherapy, which is known to lower the body’s resistance to infection.
Shantel Lanerie, wife of leading Churchill jockey Corey, dies at 42

I had a chance to meet Lanarie a few times when he rode for a buddy of mine. Total pro. Do you recall which horse he was displaced from in the Ky Derby either last year of the previous year in favor of someone else? I know it's a tough game, but Lanarie has won a ton of riding titles at CD and I thought it was terrible that he'd get bounced from a mount that he'd ridden into Derby contention.

 • Handle: $908,504,654 was bet at the few tracks running in the month of May. That covered 123 U.S. race days (cards in essence) and 1,059 races.
 • Florida: A rare day in which neither track in Florida was operating.
 • Brad Cox was 6 3-1-1 today combined in New York and Kentucky. He could finish his career as one of the all-time great trainers when all is said and done.
 • Bill Mott remains three wins shy of 5,000. He has six starters at Belmont tomorrow.
Belmont (New York):
 • Handle: $13,287,770 bet. That makes over $24 million in two days for New York.
 • Results: New York was a freak show today. Luis Cardenas, who entered with 10 lifetime wins, had two victories: 25-to-1 and 47-to-1 and each contributed to massive exotic payouts. The jockey currently rides as a 7-pound bug.
 • Race 10: A 47-to-1 bomber paid $97.00 in winning the finale. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $11,000, a staggering sum. The $.50 Pick 4 paid an enormous $81,000+. There was well over $2,000,000 bet into the last race.
 • Race 9: Paret (Jorge Vargas, Jr./James "Chuck" Lawrence II) paid $87.50 and went off 38-to-1 in winning the $80,000 Tiller Stakes. The well-raced Australian bred won for the first time in six starts since coming to North America. The mid-Atlantic based trainer was once a top steeplechase jockey. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $6,900.

 • Race 8: Tap It to Win (John Velazquez/Mark Casse) romped by five lengths at 6-to-1 The trainer said the Belmont Stakes is a possible next step. The colt is 6 3-1-0 and has won both starts this year but fared badly in both career stakes races.
 • Race 6: A 133-to-1 shot placed and paid a bewildering $101.00/$39.60. The $.10 super paid over $4,000. Look at it this way, if you bet $2 across the board, you would cash more than $140 for a $6 bet even though your horse lost.

 • Brad Cox has won with three of four starters this 2-day-old meet.
 • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won two of the first three races. It looked to be a normal day in Elmont. At the end of day #2, he shows a 17 7-2-2 (41%/65%) mark.
 • Javier Castellano has hit the board 89% with a 9 3-2-3 record.
 • Brrrr: Among those who have begun the meet cold: Junior Alvarado, Joel Rosario, Jose Ortiz, Jose Lezcano and Manny Franco.
Thistledown (Ohio):
 • Opening day: Today began the meet.
 • Handle: Over $1.9 million bet.
 • Race 4: T. D. Houghton rode the winner and is now 40 victories shy of 6,000. He has the 20th most victories all-time for riders in North America.
Belterra (Ohio):
 • Opening day: Today began the meet.
 • Handle: $986,000+.
 • Race 2: Perry Ouzts won for the 7,067th time which is 7th best in North America annals. He is the leading active rider in career wins. He returned earlier this year from injury suffered last July. Ouzts will be 66-years-old in July.
 • Rocco Bowen, who was the leading rider at Emerald Downs in 2016, 2017 and 2018, rode today for the first time since Sept. 23, 2018 when he was injured.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
 • Handle: $5.7 million bet.
 • Race 8: Guarana (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) was sent off at 1-to-5 in what could have been billed the cinch of the year, if there is such a thing, in winning this layup. The 4-year-old filly is now 5 4-1-0 and won for the first time since July at Saratoga with her first race since September (her lone loss) at Philly. Depending on the race, the Ghostzapper filly could pass $1,000,000 with her next outing. Brown could be the best trainer in the nation in many categories but certainly excels on long layoffs.

Golden Gate (California):
 • Handle: Over $2.8 million.

Joe Sharp, a top trainer at the age of 35 years and married to former jockey Rosie Napravnik, underwent 10 hours of brain surgery for a tumor.

From his wife's account:

Joe is in recovery and doing well after a 10 hr surgery at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX, to remove a benign tumor on his brain, called an acoustic Shwanoma. He will spend the night in ICU for observation and then pending all is well he will be moved to a regular floor in the morning. I am here in Houston but due to CoVid19 restrictions I’m not able to visit him in the hospital. I’m hoping to speak to him or possibly see him via FaceTime tonight. I’ll attempt to see him everyday once he’s moved out of ICU as I’ve been told by some nurses that they are staring to allow inpatients to have 1 family member visit. As soon as he is awake he will be able to talk and function normally and they will get him up and out of bed tomorrow. He will spend 3-5 days in the hospital and we we’ll fly home once he’s released. Recovery is about 6 wks until he’ll feel his normal amount of energy and he has come out of surgery with expected hearing loss in his right ear but other than that he is as good as new ❤️
We discovered Joes tumor a year ago when symptoms of "dizzy spells" became more severe. We have Richard DePass to wholeheartedly thank for keeping the pressure on Joe and reaching out to connections at U of L to get a second opinion after Joe was originally diagnosed with vertigo. We've been monitoring the tumor since it was discovered and scheduled the surgery in the beginning of this year, which was then delayed and rescheduled due to covid19. We're praying for a smooth recovery and a return home very soon. We thank everybody for their prayers and love and especially for the overwhelming support from our families, friends and from Joe's wonderful owners!

The potential somber news about EllIS Park canceling its summer meet due to lack of revenue appears to have been stifled today with historic racing available. The meet should go on June 28 into September. The machines contribute to racing purses.

 • Brad Cox is 11 7-1-1 in the month of May. He has entered horses only at Belmont and Churchill.
 • Illinois held a meeting and the complexities remain. There will be a meeting on Monday to try to iron out the issues. Churchill wants a 2-year contract for Arlington while horsemen want to focus on this year only. That is part of the issue.
 • Kerwin "Boo Boo" Clark announced his retirement at the age of 61. He last rode March 19 at Fair Grounds (Louisiana).
Belmont (New York):
 • Handle: Over $11,600,000 bet today including approximately $3.5 million in the finale. That makes over $36 million bet in New York in the meet's first three days. Brace yourself for tomorrow's card. I expect tremendous totals.
 • Phenomenal payouts: Today was one of those days.
 • Race 1: A 55-to-1 placed and paid $32 in the middle. Brad Cox won again. The Kentucky native is dominating New York to date at 5 4-1-0. The former assistant to Dallas Stewart will go down as one of the all-time greats when his career is done. He is that good.
 • Race 2: A 45-to-1 placed and paid $18.80 in the middle. Luis Cardenas, the 7-pound bug who delivered two monsters yesterday to victory, was the rider.
 • Race 3: 21-to-1 and 13-to-1 finished 1-2.
 • Race 4: Copper Chalice (Romero Maragh/Richard Lugovich) was the longest shot on the board at 74-to-1 in a field of 13 and stunned viewers. The first-time starter paid $151.00/$53.00/$19.20. The $1 exacta was among the biggest I have witnessed at $1249.80. The $.50 tri was over $2,600. The $.10 super paid close to $6,000. The $1 Pick 3 paid $1,560. The $1 double was a staggering $1,318.50. I don't know much about the trainer who doesn't send out too many horses but he has been active since the 1970s and only three times has seen 10+ wins in a year. He was 0-for-4 this year.
 • Race 5: The $1 Pick 3 was gigantic at $14,462. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $42,000. The $1 double was over $400.
 • Race 6: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $11,000.
 • Race 7: Deep field of 12 won by Joel Rosario-Steve Asmussen.
 • Race 8: Lost Ticket (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won at 20-to-1. Alvarado snapped his winless skid at the meet with his 13th mount. He does some of his best riding for Mott. And then the skies opened. It was the trainer's 4,998th career win. Only six trainers have reached 5,000 in North American history.
 • Race 9: Honey I'm Good (Junior Alvarado/Steve Asmussen) won the $80,000 feature race. Alvarado was 0-for-13 at the meet mere minutes ago, he is now 2-for-15. Second win of the day for Asmussen, too, who is about 600 wins away from becoming the winningest trainer in North American history.

 • Race 10: Uncle George (Junior Alvarado/Christophe Clement), a first-time starter sired by Uncle Mo and purchased for $310,000, gave the jockey a natural hat trick to end the day. About that 0-for-13 start, Alvarado is now 3-for-16. The all-Alvarado $1 Pick 3 paid $601. He was winless entering the race day but now is third behind only Irad Ortiz and Javier Castellano. The $1 Pick 5 paid $46,000.
 • Cold so far: Manny Franco 1/24, Jose Lezcano 0/16 and Jose Ortiz 1/19.
Laurel (Maryland):
 • Handle: Over $3 million bet, a good day for Laurel.
 • Alex Cintron rode three winners, two for trainer Claudio Gonzalez.
 • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $36,000. A nice sum, more so for Laurel.
 • Race 6: The longest shot on the board won at 16-to-1.
 • Race 3: Rebecca LaBarre rode a $68 winner which topped a $1 exacta that paid $373.90. She rode amateurs prior to gaining her first win as a pro last year. She hails from Wisconsin.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
 • Handle: Over $5 million bet.
 • Florent Geroux-Brad Cox combined to win twice.
 • Race 1: The longest shot on the board won at 14-to-1.
 • Race 2: Big John Hancock trained the winner which paid $78.40. The $1 double was a fantastic $572.80.
 • Race 3: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,300.
 • Race 4: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,800.
 • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $175,963.60.
 • Race 6: Tyler Gaffalione was DQ'd from potential back-to-back wins and placed third.
Belterra (Ohio):
 • John McKee had a riding triple as he finished 6 3-0-2. He won twice for trainer James Chapman who placed at Belmont as well.
Gulfstream (Florida):
 • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 jackpot paid out over $76,000 and that was with only one true bomb.
 • Rainbow Six: Tomorrow's card will begin with a jackpot worth over $1.427 million and it is guaranteed to reach $2,000,000.
Evangeline (Louisiana):
 • Opening day: Today began the new meet. Louisiana has allowed patrons to watch racing on the property. Spectators are allowed.
Fair Meadows (Oklahoma):
 • Opening day: Today began the new meet which will run through July 26. There will be patrons at the track.
 • Mixed meet: The track will have straight Thoroughbred cards (14 total) every Monday and Tuesday and feature Quarter Horses (20 total) on Fridays, Saturdays and two Sundays.
Golden Gate (California):
 • Chalk: Favorites won the first five races.
 • Race 7: The longest shot on the board won at 35-to-1.
Santa Anita (California):
 • Flavien Prat won three times, all within the first four races.
 • Race 6: Catch the Eye (Aaron Gryder/David Hofmans) gave the jockey a victory on his 50th birthday.

And just as I say that about New York, Churchill just paid out a $.50 Pick 5 worth over $175,000.

They DQ'd Gaff at CD. I can write a book on DQ's.

That's my boy Junior! Back-to-back. Beat Bob Baffert's runner.

Three Kentucky Derby contenders have been entered in an otherwise non-descript race at Gulf. Luca Panici re-gains the mount on Sole Volante.

Shivaree (Emisael Jaramillo/Ralph Nicks), Ete Indien (Florent Geroux - if he can get gain clearance - /Patrick Biancone) and Sole Volante (Luca Panici/Patrick Biancone) were among the seven 3-year-olds entered in Wednesday’s ninth race with a $55,000 purse going one mile under allowance conditions.

When: Wednesday, June 10, Race 9
Site: Gulfstream,
Post time 4:13 pm ET
Purse: $55,000.
Distance: One mile.

 • Chad Brown had 17 horses (16 at Belmont) entered today. He is the defending Trainer of the Year but he excels in turf racing and with long layoffs. He gets some of the best but his methods have been proven successful. He finished the day 14 3-3-1.
 • Bill Mott remained two wins away from 5,000 career victories. Only six trainers, four of whom are active, have reached 5,000.
Belmont (New York):
 • Handle: As mentioned in yesterday's review, this would be a sizable handle due to the deep card. More than $22.7 million was bet which included over $1,000,000 bet at the track though no spectators.
 • Weather: Periodic rain let to a sloppy track.
 • Race 6: Instilled Regard (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the Grade 2 $150,000 Fort Marcy Stakes. Brown finished 1-2 with four entered.
 • Race 7: Code of Honor (John Velazquez/Shug McGaughey) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Westchester Stakes. The 4-year-old colt, who finished second in the 2019 Kentucky Derby (and was my pick in that race!) has won four of his past five races. he has won over $2.4 million in 11 races.
 • Race 8: Newspaperofrecord (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Intercontinental off an 11-month layoff. The Irish-bred is 7 4-2-0 and snapped a 3-race losing skid by wiring the field in a dominating performance. Brown entered four horses and remarkably finished 1-2-3-4. The all-Brown $.10 superfecta paid $13.35. As mentioned often, Brown is almost without peer entering off long layoffs.
 • Race 9: Vekoma (Javier Castellano/George Weaver) won the Grade I $250,000 Runhappy Carter Handicap by 7 1/4 lengths which is the largest margin for this race in at least 35 years. The victory pole vaulted the winner into the $2,000,000 Breeders Cup Sprint at Keeneand (KY) in November. The 4-year-old colt is 7 5-0-1 and is close to a million dollars in earnings. Two days later, Vekoma received a 110 Beyer Figure which to date is the second highest awarded in North America this year.

 • Race 10: Javier Castellano-George Weaver teamed for consecutive wins.
 • A warming trend: Among the cold jockeys who were victorious today were Manny Franco, Jose Ortiz, Joel Rosario and Jose Lezcano who won the first four races.
 • Irad Ortiz, Jr. is 21 9-3-2 (43%/67%) at the meet.
 • Chad Brown had 16 horses entered in seven races. Three races had 3+ of Brown's horses. he finished 13 3-3-1 (he placed at Churchill Downs).
Laurel (Maryland):
 • Handle: $2.6 million. Almost $6 million bet in two days.
 • Sheldon Russell brought home both ends of the early double and had a 3-win day. His last victory was for his wife Brittany.

Gulfstream (Florida):
 • Rainbow Six: Will start in excess of $1.5 million tomorrow but is guaranteed to hit $2.2 million per track management.
 • Race 10: Almost $2 million bet in the finale.
 • Edgard Zayas-Michael Maker teamed twice and won both.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
 • Race 8: Volatile (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) almost set a track record with an 8- length victory that reduced the competition into submission in the $100,000 Aristides Stakes. What a performance! This will be a Breeders' Cup colt, IMO. The win was just two one-hundredths of a second off Indian Chant's 2007 track record of 1:07.55. Asmussen won for the 736th time at Churchill Downs which is one back of all-time leader Dale Romans. A 4-year old by Violence out of an Unbridled Song's mare. I have touted Violence horses for a while. They don't always hit but I like them. Two days later, Volatile received a 112 Beyer Figure which to date is the highest awarded in North America this year.

 • Race 9: And just like that, another Violence horse whipped the competition with a 6-length win.
 • Race 10: Four Graces (Julien Leparoux/Ian Wilkes) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Dogwood. Her time was second fastest in the 45-year history of this track. She picked up 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks as this was a prep race.
 • Race 11: Queen Medb (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) wired the field in a good race, especially by the rider in which the field closed with many suitors.

continued...

Santa Anita (California):

 • Handle: Just under $15,000,000 bet today.
 • Mike Smith rode the winners of both the Santa Anita Oaks and the Santa Anita Derby. It is the 8th time a jockey has won both races in the same year and the second time done by Smith (also 2018).
 • Flavien Prat won four of the first six races.
 • Race 5: Swiss Skydiver (Mike Smith/Kenny McPeek) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Anita Oaks in a short field of four. She won a graded stakes for the third straight time and is 7 4-1-1 lifetime. With the win, she received 100 points towards the Kentucky Oaks and is among the leading contenders for the race. She was purchased for $35,000. That is a good investment!

 • Cezanne (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) broke his maiden quite nicely in his debut race. The $3.65 million purchase by the famous Irish owners Tabor, Magnier, Smith was much yped but filled the role admirably today. The 3-year-old son to Curlin is out of a Bernardini mare.

 • Race 7: Grinning Tiger (Heriberto Figueroa/Anthony K. Saavedra) went off at 92-to-1 and paid $186.00/$48.00/$19.60 to win the $101,000 Crystal Water Stakes. The 5-year-old gelding had a 5-race losing streak and just seven wins in 26 starts. The biggest surprise among this shocker is he was bred in Oregon. How many Oregon breds have won stakes at Santa Anita? The horse broke his maiden in his second start at Araphaoe in Colorado in 2017.
 • Race 8: Honor A.P. (Mike Smith/John Shirreffs) won the Grade I $400,000 Santa Anita Derby, a Kentucky Derby prep race, in impressive style and with it gained 100 points towards entry. Smith said prior to the race the longer the distance the more he wants to run and that seemed to be in evidence. The son of Honor Code was an $850,000 purchase, paid $6.40is 4 2-2-0. Authentic (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert) placed but surprisingly was no match at 2-to-5. Smith became the second jockey (Gary Stevens) to win the Derby three straight years.

 • Race 9: Hairboux (Umberto Rispoli/Jeff Mullins) won the $150,000 Cinema Stakes on turf. The winner is 11 6-2-1 and beat his stablemate.
 • Race 10: Improbable (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert) won the $300,000 Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup. The 4-year-old colt is officially a millionaire with this win at more than $1.1 million earned and is 12 4-3-0. He finished fourth in the 2019 Kentucky Derby as the prerace favorite. Van Dyke has won 59 graded stakes -- his 15th Grade I -- since his start in 2013. Baffert won this race for the 7th time which is one behind all-time leader Charlie Whittingham. If I did the math correctly, Baffert became the third trainer in North American racing history to earn $300,000,000 lifetime. UPDATE: $300,286,367.
 • Race 11: More than $3,000,000 bet in the last race.
Woodbine (Ontario):
 • Opening day: Today for the first race at the track since December 13, 2019.
 • Handle: More than $5.5 million was bet.
 • Luis Contreras rode three winners.

The combined total for Belmont and Santa Anita today was approximately $37.6 million.
