This may have involved Christophe Clement's horses per one comment. Disturbing report of a van traveling with horses that was in an accident, caught on fire:

10 Horses Perish When Northbound Horse Van Catches Fire On New Jersey Turnpike - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Ten horses being transported by Sallee Horse Vans from Florida to New York died when the truck and trailer carrying them caught fire on the New Jersey Turnpike at approximately 3:15 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

News reports said the vehicle struck the median in the truck lanes on the Turnpike in East Windsor. The van was fully engulfed in flames, according to reports.

A statement from Sallee Horse Vans said: “While our drivers attempted to rescue the horses, it was not possible. Both drivers have been taken to the hospital, one driver has been released, and the other is being treated for smoke inhalation.”

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Over $15,000,000 bet.
  • Christophe Clement was 3 2-1-0 though the devastating news about losing horses in a van fire is more significant.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had a 4-win day. He is 29 13-3-4 (45%/69%) at the meet. His brother is 3-for-36 (8%). Irad won twice for Chad Brown.
  • Race 10: The $.50 tri was over $4,100. The $.10 super was over $7,900.
  • Race 9: Therapist (Irad Ortiz, Jr/Christophe Clement) won the $80,000 feature race.

  • Race 8: Michael Catalano, Jr. was the winning trainer. I have no idea the last time he even entered a horse at Belmont (quick research shows one in 2019 and 5 in 2017). He is a Massachusetts or New Hampshire native from what I recall and his family had horses entered at Suffolk Downs since the track opened in 1935. Winning in New York is something uncommon. Perhaps because Philadelphia, where he stables, is closed and Delaware has yet to open.
  • Races 4 and 5: What a smart ride by Junior Alvarado. Christophe Clement was the winning conditioner. Junior knew what he had. He was so confident on that ride, it was obvious from the go. Following the next race " Junior is riding great" confirmed Mr. New York Andy Serling . :)
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 jackpot exceeded $2,000,000 today and will begin Wednesday's card in excess of $1.658 million.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,300. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $5,400. The $.50 Pick 5 paid in excess of $28,000.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: The finale paid $1,986 for a $.50 Pick 3, $13,000+ for a $.50 Pick 4, $41,000+ for a $.50 Pick 5 and $283,000+ for the $.20 Pick 6.
  • Race 9: Alkhaatam (Declan Cannon/Danny Peitz) was the longest shot on the board at 21-to-1 but won the feature race.

  • Race 6: Nifty (Rafael Bejarano/Larry Jones) teamed to win. That seems to be an odd pairing but it worked.
  • Tyler Gaffalione -- the winningest rider at the meet -- and Corey Lanerie -- the second leading jockey at the meet -- each won twice, the only riders with multiple wins today. Gaffalione finished 7 2-1-1 and is the fifth winningest rider in North America in 2020. Lanerie, aka the King of Kentucky, won with 41-to-1 and 15-to-1 shots, both in the last three races.
  • Handle: Over $7 million bet.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: More than $9 million bet.
  • Race 4 and 5: Flavien Prat-Peter Miller teamed for consecutive wins.
  • Race 8: McKinzie (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Triple Bend Stakes. McKinzie is 16 8-6-0 and has earned over $3.4 million. Smith ended the week 9 4-0-2 and my guess is he is named Jockey of the Week due to the purses.

Judging by initial comments from today's meeting, Illinois horsemen and Churchill/Arlington seem to have agreed that the Arlington Million will not be held even if a 30-day meet happens; that is still on hold.

Same issues but track wants a 2-year agreement while horsemen want one-year.

Funding, purses, etc. tied into the matter. Churchill wants the Million.

June 18 appears to be the make or break date.

To further enhance my interpretation of the meeting, Churchill-Arlington wants to have bigger races (larger purses) in 2021 but the horse men want to limit a contract to 2020.

There is now written content to what I mentioned above.

No Deal for Arlington Meet

“During the course of the first four hours, a number of issues were resolved, and at the four-hour mark we had one left,” McCauley explained. “So there was optimism that that would be resolved.”

The two sides agreed on a 30-date race meet with no purse money allocated to stakes races for 2020.

“If it were only going to be a one-year agreement, I think it would be largely done and the parties could proceed,” McCauley said. But, he added, “It was very important to Arlington to have a two-year agreement, and so the focus of the conversation was, ‘Well, what happens in 2021?'”

McCauley said the crux of the talks came down to “the issue of how much of the [net] purse money generated by handle…would be used for purposes of funding overnight purses, and then what portion [and when] would [that money] be used to fund stakes races.”

McCauley said that, in particular, Arlington wanted assurance that it could schedule two of its three calling-card Grade I stakes, the Arlington Million and Beverly D., in 2021.

The two parties met again Sunday for another 2 1/2 hours to focus on that one issue, followed by a flurry of emails and calls that went into night and early Monday morning.
Yet, McCauley said, “We remain unresolved on that one issue.”

After hearing McCauley’s briefing, IRB chairman Daniel Beiser said, “I guess it’s safe to say that there is no agreement in place at this point. Therefore, we will not be acting on this request today. We’ll be deferring it to the next meeting, which is June 18. Hopefully these talks will continue, and there will be a resolution to this.”

When I wrote about the performance we witnessed on Saturday in Kentucky and immediately stated this is a "Breeders' Cup colt," I had some idea of the magnitude but today the Violence colt out of an Unbridled's Song mare received a 112 Beyer which is the highest issued in 2020.

Race 8: Volatile (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) almost set a track record with an 8- length victory that reduced the competition into submission in the $100,000 Aristides Stakes. What a performance! This will be a Breeders' Cup colt, IMO. The win was just two one-hundredths of a second off Indian Chant's 2007 track record of 1:07.55. Asmussen won for the 736th time at Churchill Downs which is one back of all-time leader Dale Romans. A 4-year old by Violence out of an Unbridled Song's mare. I have touted Violence horses for a while. They don't always hit but I like them.

The prior high was 109 to Faction Cat, a 7-year-old Florida bred who ran in Tampa Bay in February.

Additionally, Vekoma, a son to Candy Ride, got a 110 Beyer for his race at New York on Saturday. That figure is second highest of any horse for 2020.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Sheldon Russell had another 3- win day. He is 11 6-1-2 the past two racing days at Laurel. He is the leading rider at the young meet with seven wins.
  • Race 9: A 90-to-1 shot finished third and paid $31.20.
  • Race 8: Russeldoingthings (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell), a first time starter, was aptly named for the jockey and trainer hubby-wife combo.

  • Race 7: American Sailor (Jevian Toledo/Wayne Potts), an 8-year-old former stakes winner, wired the field and paid $9.80. American Sailor has races in 15 states and 20 tracks. He broke his maiden in his second start at Del Mar and among his 14 wins and 43 starts are four straight victories at Maryland tracks and 5 wins in 8 starts at Laurel. The only other track in which he has won multiple times is Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts) with Mike Luzzi riding each victory. This horse has raced in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and California.
  • Handle: More than $2.9 million wagered.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Race 8: Sky Pilot (Adrian Flores/Lucinda Knowles), the second longest shot on the board at 32-to-1, provided someone with a $2 Pick 5 that paid over $62,000. Now that is divine intervention.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Daniel Centeno-Gerald Bennett teamed to win the first two races. Centeno is tied for the second most wins at the meet, Bennett is the top trainer.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Stewart Elliott-Steve Asmussen teamed to win three times. The rider won three straight starts. Asmussen is less than 600 wins away from being the winningest trainer in North American history. My guess, based on his recent history, the mark could be snapped in 2022 unless something unforeseen occurs.
  • Handle: More than $2.3 million
Arapahoe (Colorado):
  • Opening day: A mix of QH and TB races.

  • Maxfield will not run in the Belmont Stakes but instead will prep in the Blue Grass (July 11 at Keeneland) for the Kentucky Derby. Brendan Walsh trains. Update...off the Triple Crown trail due to an injury announced Wednesday
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Handle: More than $1.3 million wagered.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won the final two races. He has 7,069 wins in his career, seventh most in North American history.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Handle: Exceeded $3,000,000 for the third time in eight racing days this meet.
  • Race 2: A 57-to-1 in a field of 12 won and paid $116.80
  • Race 3: A 15-to-1 shot won by six lengths and the double may be the biggest one in North America this year at $3,669.80. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $5,600.
  • Race 4: Won by the favorite, the $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,200
--------

Delta Downs (Louisiana) will open a 36-date meet for Quarter Horses on Wednesday night, and spectators will be allowed. That will make three states within the state operating.

A review of yesterday's sales at Ocala, Florida of 2-year-olds in training shows that from 192 horses offered, 133 were sold through the ring for gross total of $12,166,500.

The biggest seller was a $750,000 Ghostzapper colt named Esqwire who was sold to an agent representing Kaleem Shah. He owned Bayern and Dortmund among others and my assumption is if this colt develops it will be shipped to California to train. Bob Baffert? Doug O'Neill?

The sale continues this week:

It's official No live racing at Marquis Downs...:(

Prairieland cancels entire Marquis Downs season

Thanks for the update. The small tracks add a local flair. Though not small yet is diminishing in significance, it is part of the frustration of the excessive mess in Illinois.

I haven't seen much update about the two tracks in Alberta either.

All known track updates in post #2 of this thread.

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won consecutive races. He has 7,071 wins in his career, seventh most in North American history.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Daniel Centeno won three times. He is 33 wins shy of 3,000 in his career. He won consecutive races for Gerald Bennett, the leading trainer at the meet.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Mandatory payout: The pick 6 will be guaranteed to reach $2.5 for Saturday's card provided it is not hit earlier.
  • Race 5: Amanzi Yimpilo (Mario Pino/Wesley Ward) broke her maiden in her debut today. The victory gave the 58-year-old jockey, who hasn't ridden since November, his 6,941st lifetime win. Pino is 10th all-time in North American annals. Ward, of course, is among the best trainers in the land with 2-year-olds. He is 29% with first-time starters in 2020.

  • Race 7: Sole Volante (Luca Panici/Patrick Biancone) went from last to first to win this otherwise nondescript $55,000 purse. Ete Indien and Shivaree were among the competitors and all three are under consideration for the Kentucky Derby. Luca Panici: you can't stop him you can only hope to contain him. Sole Volante has been pointed to either the June 20 Belmont Stakes or the July 11 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. The July 18 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park is the next likely start for Ete Indien who is also trained by Biancone. Shivaree is likely headed to the Blue Grass.

  • Race 10: Approximately $1.9 million bet into the finale.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Opening day: Today began the new meet.
  • Francisco Arrieta was 8 2-4-0. He was the lone rider with multiple wins, no trainer won more than once. He was the leading jockey at the 2019 meet.
  • Race 2: Chad Lindsey scored with a 31-to-1 bomber. He won his first race on New Years' Day in 2016 at Tampa Bay. He is a former bull rider from Texas.
Delta Downs (Louisiana):
  • Opening day: Delta is the third track in the state currently operating.

Finally! Tatweej, the unraced 4-year-old who I have mentioned often from day one, is entered in a race. I do not like that post and it wouldn't surprise me if he was scratched but Todd Pletcher is the conditioner. UPDATE: Scratched, back in training for maiden race.

Tatweej was the horse who floored me at the September 2017 sales from the second he hit the ring not knowing he would be purchased for $2,500,000. He had been training in South Carolina, Saratoga and Florida from what I know.

But at least he has surfaced on the charts...

As we are currently less than 10 days from the Belmont Stakes, here are brief reflections of races going back to 2000.

2019: Sir Winston gave trainer Mark Casse his second win in this Triple Crown season. Only Wayne Lukas prior had two Triple Crown wins with different horses in the same year. Casse won the Preakness with Sir Winston's stablemate War of Will.

2018: Justify eventually became the first Triple Crown winner to retire undefeated with a 6 6-0-0 record. Bob Baffert won his second Triple Crown in four years.

2017: Tapwrit gave sire Tapit his third win in the Belmont Stakes in the past four years. Tapwrit never won again and was retired after five more races.

2016: Creator, wearing lucky #13, defeated Destin by mere inches in a very exciting and tight finish that was initially too close to call. Winning trainer Steve Asmussen had a rabbit in the race when Gettysburg, at 55-to-1, set the pace. The strategy worked ideally.

2015: American Pharoah "is the one" as exclaimed by track announcer Larry Collmus. Pharoah became the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. Pharoah retired 11 9-1-0 and has turned into a hot young sire with his progeny excelling perhaps more so on turf. Over $134 million was bet on the card.

2014: Tonalist not only won the race but defeated the popular California Chrome in front of 102,199 spectators and countless viewers. Following the race, owner Steve Coburn unleashed his disappointment calling the winning connection's refusal to run in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness "the cowards' way." Chrome finished fourth and became the 13th horse since Affirmed in 1978 to fail at the Triple Crown by losing the Belmont Stakes. Tonalist's broodmare sire is Pleasant Colony, one of those 13 failures, and both were owned by Shel Evans. Chrome ran 13 races prior to the Belmont while Tonalist ran just four times.

2013: Palace Malice won comfortably in a large field of 14 horses which included both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners. A son to Curlin who is an exceptional sire, Palace Malice won seven races in 19 starts. Hall of Fame connections with Mike Smith and Todd Pletcher

2012: Union Rags hugged the rail and won by inches in a fantastic finish. Ridden professionally by John Velazquez and trained by Michael Matz who suffered the tremendous blow six years earlier when Barbaro suffered a catastrophic injury in the Preakness. Expected favorite I'll Have Another was scratched prior to the race and denied a chance at the Triple Crown. Union Rags hit the board in all eight career starts except the Kentucky Derby.

2011: Ruler on Ice did not run in either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness and found the sloppy track in New York to his liking. Cue up a certain album by Van Halen because the winner paid $51.50. The $2 Pick 4 following this race was over $142,000 which was indicative of the race day in New York. He finished his career with 4 wins in 23 races.

2010: Drosselmeyer paid $28 with Mike Smith riding for Bill Mott. He was a $600,000 purchase in 2008. He is one of three horses in history to win the Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic (American Pharoah and A.P. Indy) and the only one to do it in different years.

Split posts due to limits of allowed videos...

2009: Summer Bird paid $25.40 in a race that put trainer Tim Ice on center stage. He seemed to fade from the industry after a brief 9-year career and only 146 career wins. The horse had just four lifetime wins.

2008: Da' Tara was a 38-to-1 bomber, the longest shot on the board who wired the field. Trained by Nick Zito and ridden by a relatively young Alan Garcia. The winner finished his career with 11 losses and was just 2-for-19 lifetime. The race was best known for the unceremonious end of Big Brown's Triple Crown bid. Brown finished his career with two victories following this race and with seven wins in eight lifetime starts. Whatever happened in the race, stories have been told, accounts documented, Brown's chance for glory fizzled when the entire stage was there for his connections.

2007: Rags to Riches out-dueled Curlin and became the first filly to win the race since 1905. She paid $10.60 and was sired by the immensely gifted A.P. Indy. Perhaps the biggest shock of all was the priceless reaction of trainer Todd Pletcher who is normally stoic but showed uncommon emotion in winning a Triple Crown race.

2006: Jazil was ridden by 19-year-old Fernando Jara who took control of the race at the mile pole where he sat seventh and played catch me if you can with a powerful run from the outside. Jazil won just two races in 11 career starts.

2005: Afleet Alex was one of the most intriguing stories in racing history. Associated with a childhood cancer fundraiser, Alex had one of the most impressive stretch kicks in racing annals. Alex lost the Derby but had two of the most staggering tales in Triple Crown races including nearly falling to his knees in the Preakness and throwing jockey Jeremy Rose to the ground before recovering for victory. And then this stretch drive. He never raced again and finished 12 8-2-1. The little horse that could... and did! Relive that kick "Afleet Alex just blew by Giacomo like he was standing still!"

2004: Birdstone broke the hearts of many racing fans in front of a record-crowd of 120,139 and biggest TV audience in the history of the race. Even his jockey Edgar Prado and trainer Nick Zito apologized to racing fans after Smarty Jones -- known as America's horse -- failed in his glorious attempt at the Triple Crown. Tom Durkin, usually engaging, was dejected in his race call, too: "It’s been 26 years... Just one furlong away... They’re coming down to the finish... Can Smarty Jones hold on? ... Here comes Birdstone... Birdstone surges past..." Whether jockey Stewart Elliott was to blame or not for Smarty's loss, Birdstone shocked the masses at 36-to-1 and paid $74 to win. Prado won another Belmont Stakes, his second in three years. Birdstone won the Champagne prior and Travers Stakes later that year, he finished 5 4-0-0 in his career in New York and 4 1-0-0 elsewhere. Over $14 million was bet on the card at the track which established a record for the race. All-sources handle was over $96 million.

2003: Empire Maker prevented Funny Cide's attempt for the Triple Crown. Empire Maker hit the board in all eight starts and that included six graded stakes. Funny Cide was a New York-bred gelding, owned by locals, and a crowd of 101,562 showed despite the raw weather.

2002: Sarava was among the most unlikely Triple Crown race winners of all-time and at 70-to-1 stopped War Emblem's bid at winning the Triple Crown. Sarava outraced Medaglia d'Oro who went onto being one of the best sires in recent years. Ridden by the univerally liked Edgar Prado and trained by Kenny McPeek, the horse was later sent to Bob Baffert's stable and struggled the rest of his career by failing to hit the board with eight career starts. War Emblem stumbled badly at the start and never recovered. Attendance was 103,222 which set a track record that was later surpassed. Sarava won just three times in 17 starts and lost his last eight races. A successful $2 bet this day netted $142.50.

2001: Point Given was sent off the prohibitive favorite and decimated the field by over 12 lengths. It was the seventh largest margin of victory in this race's history. He was a highly touted 3-year-old who had all the characteristics of a truly great horse. Jockey Gary Stevens called him the best he ever rode. Point Given finished 13 9-3-0 and only his failure in the Kentucky Derby was a blemish to hitting the board in every start. He nearly earned over $4 million lifetime.

2000: Commendable was a surprise winner at 18-to-1. Runners up Aptitide and Unshaded were dead last through the mile and each rallied strongly but couldn't close in on the winner. He finished his career with two wins in 12 starts and finished 17th in the Kentucky Derby. His only other win was his maiden race at Del Mar. He benefited from a clean break by Pat Day and casually held his position to victory. Hall of Fame connections including legendary trainer Wayne Lukas who won this race for the fourth time in seven years. Lukas won a Triple Crown race for the 13th time.

And one last look...

1999: Charismatic was a claimer who almost won the Triple Crown. Truly a remarkable story one that would have been among the most compelling in racing annals had he been victorious. But perhaps most importantly as he crossed the finish line with a limp was Chris Antley's resolve to risk his own life by falling to the track and saving the horse from peril by elevating the equine athlete. That was an indelible mark. Antley, known affectionately as "The Ant Man" who was one of the best jocks in his period, lost a battle to demons that plagued him for a long time the following year. And that led to one of the most touching cartoon sketches in newspaper history with a drawn Charismatic placing a rose over Antley's head stone.
