Great, smart deal. Barabanov gets to prove himself and show he wasn't a fluke and DW could potentially have found his next Donskoi (if he wasn't, in fact, a fluke). Love it.

NOW ALL WE NEED IS A #1 CENTER AND A STARTING GOALTENDER HAHAHAH EASY

Good deal for both sides. I doubt Barabanov keeps up anything near this level of scoring next year but he could be a good middle sixer and the cap hit is low enough that he can be buried under the line if he totally flops.

Solid work all around. Nice low cap hit, short term to prove he fits over a whole season and earn a bigger deal afterwards, and we don't need to worry about losing him because his KHL experience doesn't count as "pro" seasons and thus he's expansion draft exempt.

Would guess this is also writing on the wall for Donato to be exposed in the expansion draft as well. With the glutton of 3rd line wingers we currently have, don't see it making sense to pay $2 million or something like that on Donato when you can get similar production for cheaper in guys like Barabanov along with Balcers and Leonard. Think Balcers signs for $1.2-1.5 million for 2 years while Leonard is still on his ELC. Forward group probably shakes out as shown below if I had to guess the immediate look. Still room to make a major deal involving Meier or Labanc, but figuring out who the final center is going to be will be crucial (would love to find a 2C that bumps Couture to 3C where he could be a mismatch).

Sharks don't need to expose Donato in the expansion draft - they can protect the five expensive forwards plus Donato and Balcers, only exposing Gambrell (4C), Nieto if resigned (4W), and a few prospects (Dahlen, True, Viel, Halbgewachs). Even if the Sharks don't want to keep Donato, they can sign and trade him for something (4th round pick?).

Anyway, very happy to see Barabanov back, especially for that contract.

That's an interesting point. In my mind I keep figuring we need that #1 center, but a strong #2 (still a hard find but easier) does help a lot by bumping Couture down. It's not a Stanley Cup winning team but it's a significantly stronger one especially if Hertl can stay healthy and play like he plays in-between catastrophic injuries.

The goalie thing is killing us, though.

Very happy!

Now that he has a contract, Im hoping Team Russia calls him up for the WC and he and Knyzhiv go together. Then Im hoping at WC they espouse on what a great organization thw Sharks are and convince some national team player with untapped potential to sign with here. We get a new guy next year with a Kaprisov-like impact and we maketheplayoffs and winthecupdougiesignsalifelongcontractextensionandallisgood.

I don't think Donato has much trade value. He was worth a 3rd last offseason because he was locked in for another year at $1.9. Didn't take any steps forward this year but has probably scored enough over the past two to get a solid raise in arbitration. I can't see anyone giving up an asset to potentially have to pay up to $3 million a year for someone who's basically a 4th line PP sepcialist. There will be plenty of better UFAs available for less money thanks to the flat cap.
