This. Like you said, he’s done everything asked and as improved throughout the season. Not to mention he’s versatile being able to be a 4th line forward and bottom pairing D. No problem with this signing

Probably not, but I guess it depends on the matchup and how the games go. If the games get tough, having him bring some extra physicality might not be a bad thing even if he is objectively worse than some of those guys above. We are talking about one player here.

Honestly not bad at all. MacDermaid has proven he can be a #7 D and at times this year I would argue he has played as a solid #6, he’s also willing to play forward, stickup for teammates and can throw them with the best.

The amount this guy has done in just one season to stick is amazing and this contract is well deserved.

This deal doesn't start till next year. It has nothing to do with who dresses in the playoffs a month from now. 2 of those players likely won't be with the Avs next year (Helm and Cogliano)
