Funny how this board thinks it was a great game and the Leafs board thinks it was the biggest snoozefest.
Leafs fans aren't accustomed to the style of hockey that brings success in the playoffs. That was a fast-paced, tight-checking game, and the Avs played a perfect road game. Would have liked to see some more finish (Nuke on the breakway/PP) and perhaps some more puck poise to have that extra 'pause' instead of doing the obvious play all the time (that usually leads to playoff success too) but can't complain

So by that same token, were we only one well-placed shot away from winning in regulation?

It can't be just one way. The Avs had more shots, scoring chances and high danger chances than the Leafs last night and won the special teams battle. They controlled the game from start to finish even after going down 1-0.

Last night was a clinic on playoff hockey.

That's a bit disingenuous to the rest of the players who busted their asses last night checking the Leafs and helping hold them to under 20 shots.
In fairness that was arguably the best game our role players probably played all season long.

Our depth role players for the most part this season have been super inconsistent at best.

Most nights this year if 29, 8 or 96 aren't doing the heavy lifting we lose. The exceptions are the nights George gives us A+ goaltending which he has done plenty this year.

Not saying the depth role players aren't doing anything helpful, they just aren't at all consistently reliable on both sides of the ice. It's a mixed bag and you never know what you're going to get. The only player that hasn't gotten consistent time on line 1, that has been fairly reliable is JTC. But he also gets plenty of ice with the big 3 via PP time.

I think you're underestimating the impact our depth players have had.

Are they good offensively? Not really. But this team has been one of the best defensive teams in the league all season - that's not just our top guys dominating.

Yes, there are breakdowns that occur and they look bad because our team's breakdowns tend to be of the major variety. However, this team has done a tremendous job buying into Bednar's system all season and checking the life out of their opponents when they're on. When they're off, yeah we see the gaps this team has by losing games to the Stars, Devils, Kraken, etc. But when they're on, they can beat anyone in this league.

The problem is ensuring they stay "on" over a two month stretch towards a Stanley Cup. That I am not convinced they can do with this year's roster and the injuries.

That game was incredible. Not sure what a few of you guys watched but to me it’s one of the better complete games the Avs have played. Completely shut down a very good team and outside of 2 breakdowns in the first few minutes the defense was the best I’ve seen all year. Makar is playing the best he’s played this entire season and with Toews, Girard and Byram I think that’s the best top 4 in the league. Obviously need a bit more finish but going into Toronto and winning that kind of game bodes well for the playoffs. Seems like they are rounding into form at about the perfect time
