Kane is going to be 33 this season and Matthews had the far better season last year, so it seems to me Matthews has passed Kane at this point in time.

You are lacking context. Matthews had the #4 scorer in the league on his line.

Kane made Alex DeBrincat a PPG player.

Why is this always a thing on here? I see it all the time with Jake Guentzel, too. It makes it sound like the star player turned someone who would otherwise be a 40 or 50 point guy into a guy that produces like an 80 point guy.

Because Alex DeBrincat was never a PPG player. He has point totals of 52/76/45 in his last 3 seasons prior to 2021.

Yeah, he was technically a "50-point guy"

And yes, Crosby was a big factor in Jake's ascension

So a guy who managed to score 52 points as a rookie, 76 points, and 45 in 70 games (53 point pace) was technically a 50 point guy? What kind of math is that where you describe a guy who has produced higher than 50 points (and in one case 76 points) as a "50-point guy"?

That's like calling Crosby an 80 point guy or Kane a 70 point guy.

And yes, Crosby was a big factor in Jake's ascension

Massive difference between a player benefiting from playing with an elite player and a player being *made* by the elite player.

Well he had played 3 seasons and 2/3 he had produced 52 or lower. His jump from 52 to 76 points was a huge breakout, but then he went back down to 45 points (I'll give you the 53 points he was pacing for). Seems like he regressed back to the mean?

Using his point-pace for 53 points in 2020, he was averaging 60.3 points/season. "50-point guy" was wrong, my bad.

I'll give you "60-point guy". But that is nowhere near PPG. That's a 20-point increase. He was clearly not a PPG player by any means.

Who says Alex wouldn't be made in another season or so by Kane? This is year 1 of him being PPG, let's see how it plays out
