Atd-ML#10 THE MINOR LEAGUE DRAFT

Sign-up Thread

(The same rules will apply as when I ran it last winter (in MLD#8) since it went awesome by all accounts. :) )

The draft will last 24 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 3 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

Trading is allowed. Trades must be equal in numbers, 2 picks for 2 picks, 1 player and a pick for 2 picks, and so on. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed. Rounds 15/16 through 23/24 will be double picks per round.

The time limit is 4 hours. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. You can PM your preferred pick to me beforehand and be assured I won't ever be drafting your top pick for whatever round because my pre-draft prospect list is so darn long I can do without (even if with a grimace). Newly added procedure: If the HfBoards goes down then email your pick (or shortlist) to [email protected] and the picks will be sorted out afterwards.

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

You must PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not drafted in the ATD#10. As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main atd#10 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

Absolutely no dropping of players: once drafted they are drafted, but players could be traded if team needs change. At the end of the draft a team could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following time periods:

1939 or earlier
1940-1965
1966-1979
1980-1989
1990-1999
in 2009 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 200-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be an all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

In MLD10 I will manage the Oxford Dark Blues, involved in the longest standing rivalry in hockey, dating back to their 1885 win over the Cambridge Tabs.*

* I managed the rival Tabs waaay back in ATD4. The top line was Hull-Oates-Hull (looooved that). Then Goulet-Nieuwendyk-Kurri. On the back lines were Gainey, Jarvis, Brian Sutter, Dale Hunter, Ratelle and Maltsev in some combination. The defensemen were Davydov, Kuzkin, Ramsey, Ludwig, Bergman, Vadnais, Gonchar with Plante and Fuhr between the pipes. And mine wasn't one of the great teams! (admittedly weak blueline given how few teams were competing, though the Soviet pairing was more solid than was given credit for and the PK and PP specialists made for wicked special teams play).

Of course I'll be in. Glad to see that VanI is running this thing again.

To the surprise of nobody, raleh and I will be co-GMs again. Our team will celebrate another hockey organization celebrating 100 years this season, the Melville Millionaires. Four Melville alumns - Eddie Shore, Sid Abel, Brian Propp and John Ferguson - have been selected in the ATD. Two or three more will be picked in the MLD.

A lot of good talent in this draft. Especially in net. I've counted about eight to 10 excellent No. 1 goalies - guys who have been fixtures in the ATD in the past. Some strong forwards are also available.

Is the all-star team the same as the ill-fated call-up team that we had in MLD 7?

The call-up team was something different than the all-star team (have you ever watched the AHL? a guy called up for most of the season has a poor chance of being a minor league all-star!).

Anyways, we're going with the rules of ATD8 not ATD7, so there will be no call-up players.

I'm in as the Dayton Ohio Mincer Rays
It's a great day, to spend in Dayton, Ohio...

Anyways, looks like a good draft so far. That's seven teams. Eight good GMs. (raleh and I in the perpetual co-GM partnership).

And VanI always does a great job of running this thing. For those who haven't been in the MLD before, VanI runs a tight ship, he works hard, and he comes up with some pretty good twists that work well for the MLD, things that wouldn't work in the ATD. An all-star team in the ATD would be mundane and predictable. An all-star team in the MLD is interesting and unpredictable.

If anyone's looking for a co-GM, I'd be happy to throw some certifiably awesome ideas into the pot, but I can't guarantee I'll be online enough to run one of these things myself.

Except for the time that I thought Larry Murphy, Ron Greschner, Ed Jovanovski, Steve Duchesne and Sandis Ozolinsh would form a passable defensive 2-6. Yeah, that team made it out of the first round ...

You made it out of the first round with them, and not with Robinson/Pronger/Bouchard? Wow.

In a transaction that will surprise practically everyone, Regina is pleased to add an Assistant, Junior, Mini, Quasi, Pseudo-GM....

Funny how the big boss has in his user title that he was pwned by said mini junior assistant. If ya can't beat em, get them to join you, right? ;) :sarcasm: :D

Anyways, yes, I will be teaming up on the dark side (Regina) with seventies. I don't have enough time or energy to operate a full team on my own, or even fully operate a team with a partner, so I'll more than likely be in an assistant role like seventies said. I haven't missed a draft since doing my first one (ATD 7), and I'm not about to break that streak.
