NOTES: Ken Dryden did everything he could to keep Springfield in game 3, but the Flyers could not be denied. Dryden was a force when the Isotopes were down a man. He and the PK units kept Philadelphia's power play off the scoresheet. However, Coach Don Cherry complained after the game that his guys just couldn't get organized. He said they seemed too anxious to make something happen. After dominating the first period the Flyers were still in a scoreless tie. Joe Nieuwendyk stole a puck early in the second from Gilles Marotte and raced in on a breakaway to finally open the scoring. The Flyers scored again quickly when Gilmour set shore up on the point, his rebound came out to Kovalchuk and the Russian star wired it into the top corner on a one timer. Springfield finally came to life in the third period. They controlled the play while out shooting and out chancing the Flyers. However, they just couldn't beat Parent. Finally when Pronger took a 4 minute high sticking penalty and made things worse by arguing the call, Selanne took the puck and went coast to coast to score a gorgeous 5 on 3 goal. In the last minute with the Sprinfield net empty, Keenan tried setting Chara in front of the Flyers goal. He and Shore got back into it and shore broke his stick over Chara's left arm. The big man and Shore went at it again, but Chara was clearly favouring his arm and Shore easily took him down. Shore wouldn't let up with both linesmen trying to pull him off and he was thown out of the game. As a result of his actions Shore will be suspended for game 4 and Chara will likely miss at least game 4 with an undisclosed injury. Philadelphia held on in a frantic final 16 seconds of 6 on 3 play without Pronger and Shore. Parent made a fantastic save on a cross crease one timer by Bathgate.

NOTES: With Eddie Shore suspended the Flyers planned to tighten up team defence. It didn't look good when under a minute into the game Brad Park sprung Bathgate and Ullman on a two on one that Bathgate finished with a tap in. Philadelphia responded by playing perhaps their best team game of the series. Cherry rolled four lines and six defencemen with a tenacious forecheck. They fought bravely through the left wing lock of the Isotopes while generating a ton of chances in the first and second periods. Unfortunately for the Flyers, Ken Dryden was unbeatable. No matter how lethargic Springfield played, Dryden bailed them out. The Isotopes generated almost nothing for the rest of the first and most of the second. Early in the third Park caught Barber with a breakway pass on a late change and suddenly the Isotopes had a 2-0 lead on a shocked Flyers team. Springfield tightened up and it seemed like nothing would get through for Philadelphia when Chris Pronger blasted a slap shot through a crowd to cut the lead in half. Springfield shortened their bench and played the lock to perfection the rest of the way to hold onto their lead and tie the series.

NOTES: After tough defensive battles in every other game of the series, things broke wide open in game 5. Brad Park threw a low wrist shot off the foot of Gerard to give his team an early lead. Doug Gilmour wired a slap shot from 20 feet out past Dryden to tie it. Springfield dominated the period with shot after shot on Parent who played as well as he has all series in the first. In the second both goalies were left scratching their heads. Springfield scored three times in three minutes to blow the game open. Eddie Shore took a questionable cross checking penalty to put his team down 5 on 3 and Bobby Smith finally converted a rebound. Norm Ullman scored a minute later on a great 3 on 2 rush with his linemates. Walt Tkaczuk got his first of the playoffs off a rebound that just snuck through Parent's pads. The Flyers could've just given up but Keenan called time out and the troops rallied. Their hard work paid off when Hawerchuk tipped in a Shore shot. Dave Poulin then scored with time running out in the third on a gorgeous backhand. Hod Stuart scored a massive goal early in the third by jumping into the rush on a two on one. The Flyers answered back on the power play when Shore beat Dryden clean. Philadelphia pressured heavily all period and Dryden made three huge saves on wide open chances. Teemu Selanne then took advantage of bad pass in the Springfield zone to start at rush with Smith that ended up in a Northcutt rebound goal. The Isotopes were outplayed but took advantage of their chances in the third and held on to take a 3-2 series lead in front of a wild crowd.

NOTES: Brad Park was outplayed for most of the series by Eddie Shore, but Park held his own and in game 6 matched Shore at every step. They each scored one and had an assist in the final game of the series. After a very even and scoreless first period, Park opened the scoring later in the second by putting a wrist shot by Parent on the PP. It's playoff time and a screen by Bill Barber that may have been borderline interference was what it took to get one past Parent. Kevin Stevens tipped in an Eddie Shore shot to tie the game early in the third. Cherry put Shore and Pronger together to try and generate something, but when the went off after the goal Springfield took advantage of not having one of them on the ice with a Selanne goal only 19 seconds later. Eddie Shore wouldn't let it end like that and stole a pass in his own zone, made a great move around Burrows and fed Gilmour for a 2 on 1. Gilmour returned the past and Shore tied the game to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Unfortunately for the Flyers, another Brad Park point shot was tipped in by Andy Bathgate for a third Springfield lead. The Isotopes locked down for the rest of the period and Dryden stopped Gilmour on a breakaway to preserve the series clinching win.

Hmm, I think if there's posts in between your two, then it won't auto merge.

So like after you post one game, get someone to post in between your next game writeup. Nice work with them BTW.

Thanks for the great write-up, shawn.

It was a good series, John. The Lecavalier is ridiculously tough in this draft, and I think you got the short end of the stick in the regular season rankings. That was a very good team you put together, and I feel fortunate to have escaped the first round after such a tough matchup.

It appears things won't get any easier in the next round with the 67's coming to town.
