ATD 2012 - Draft Thread I

ATD 2012 !!!

Now on a 10 hour clock

1). The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards, a coach and 4 extra picks.

2). The time windows will be tight but reasonable.

• 12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
• then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
• then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
• then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
• then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25

One hour time window deduction for each skipped pick (two hour deduction for missing a 12 hour clock - leave a list), with a minimum 4 hour clock guaranteed regardless of deductions.

3). Trading is to be reasonably fair and balanced and lopsided trades will need to be re-worked or dropped. This is at the discretion of the trade committee.

• Trading while on the clock is discouraged and will be penalized like a missed deadline, so if you do it, you better be sure that's what you want.
• There is no limit to the number of trades you can make.

4). Regular season rankings MUST BE VOTED ON by at least one GM (if the team is co-GM'd) per team. The penalty if not done is a lowering in the standings because we would also be ranking our own teams in our own divisions (e.g., most teams will rank their own team 1st in their own division; if a team doesn't vote they loose out on a 1st place vote opportunity and hence their team's ranking will be lower than it could have been). All teams make the playoffs. 4th & 5th seeds play a 2-game series to narrow the field to 32.

5). REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFF VOTING TO BE A SET RESPONSIBILITY.

6). NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!!!

Here are my thoughts on some picks up to now:

- hasn't Lidstrom unequivocally proven himself better than Potvin at this point? It was obviously the physicality skillset VR must have been looking for, but at the 10th pick is physicality enough to make you ignore an obviously better player? If physicality was my MO, I'd still start with Lidstrom and then build with physicality after that, when the differences from pick to pick aren't so rigid.

- I like Maurice Richard right there.

- I like Mikita at 13th, and I like him better than Morenz, but just by a hair. I'm surprised to see Morenz last 6 more spots.

- tony d got an epic steal at 28th with Messier. There will need to be a lot of vigilant thread-pruning going on throughout the draft and I hope you guys are up to it. Don't be scared to merge people's posts that are close to eachother and could have been posted together.

without looking back at that first thread, I'm thinking that for there to be 1000 posts in 1.4 rounds of drafting, there had to be a lot of nonsense in there and we could probably still be using that thread if it were pruned.

yes, he was dangerously violent and possibly a sociopath, but was also elite in basically every part of hockey. very fast, very good defensively, high scoring player, big for his era, very physical.

and many other very dirty players have been picked. shore, howe, lindsay, chelios, lalonde, harvey, clarke, early mikita.

couple of key discussions I remember

1) a whole lot of discussion about pick 5-12 or so , the usual ( remember Maurice Richard being discussed more than the others )

2) a goalie discussion ( hasek , sawchuk , roy and plante battle )

3) a defenseman discussion ( mostly kelly vs potvin , their offense etc )

4) early statistical discussion and comparison since they all got picked in the same range

5) we're now discussing whether clancy was the best D available by far

Nice pick, I took a real long look at him when I was trying to decide who to take. I think skill-wise he was the best available defenseman, although some could argue that his attitude issues drop him below other less skilled Dmen

Thanks, on in Round 1 I was between Messier and Bossy with Park being a distant 3rd. When I thought about it even more I figured Messier was the logical pick. When Bossy wentthe decision was made easier.

As to Hall, I had no intention of picking a goalie this early but when he started slipping from his position from last year I knew I had to pick him. The guy is one of the top goalies ever, thrilled to have him with the team.

I usually would say flip a coin between them but in my situation, Sakic's offensive longevity combined with good defense won out over Yzerman's more polarized career.

I'm sure he was.. Park was definitely the safe pick but my mission this ATD is to resurrect the Paul Coffey everyone seems to have forgotten about.

Had him last year, Here's the bio I created for him last year, he is a great pick at this point, I kind of see him as a less impressive version of Denis Potvin, albeit much more ferocious and ruthless.

cleghorn was probably not a sociopath, though. from 70s' bio:

For years Sprague Cleghorn was regarded as a bad man to tangle with in professional hockey, but there never was a player who could make him retreat. There were times when he was held up to severe criticism, and Cleghorn certainly did earn many penalties, but there was another side to this man that few understood. He was generous to a fault to his friends, and he was mighty loyal. Just recently in the frigid waters of Lake St. Francis he proved it.

With two companions, Cleghorn set out on a fishing trip, and when a mile from shore the man who couldn't swim tried to change his position in the boat, in a second it turned over. The waves were running very high, but Cleghorn and Strachan placed their pal on the bottom of the capsized boat, and started the long battle to reach the shore. For an hour and a half they struggled along, with Cleghorn, the man in charge, urging his companions to keep on battling. The weather and the water were bitterly cold, and the non-swimmer several times slipped from his precarious position, and had it not been for the fighting spirit displayed by one of the greatest hockey players who ever lived he would never have ben saved. Finally they reached what they thought was the shore only to discover that they had landed in deep muskeg, where they sank to their hips, but managed to struggle through to a barned-wire fence, where Cleghorn grasped the wire with one hand and with the other dragged the non-swimmer to terra firma. Cleghorn's hands were cruelly torn, and all three men were in bad condition, but it was not until they had reached a farmhouse that Cleghorn gave evidence of the terrific battle against death in which he had just conquered.

Here are my thoughts on some picks up to now:

- hasn't Lidstrom unequivocally proven himself better than Potvin at this point? It was obviously the physicality skillset VR must have been looking for, but at the 10th pick is physicality enough to make you ignore an obviously better player? If physicality was my MO, I'd still start with Lidstrom and then build with physicality after that, when the differences from pick to pick aren't so rigid.

- I like Maurice Richard right there.

- I like Mikita at 13th, and I like him better than Morenz, but just by a hair. I'm surprised to see Morenz last 6 more spots.
