Hawks cap situation is interesting...

Yeah they don't have as much to deal with as the Caps, but still not in a good spot there either. Too many garbage contracts. They were lauded for years for letting the right guys go at the right time to keep re-tooling but they paid a price to keep that window open and are in a tough spot now and going forward.

Still don't think the caps are done. They'll be right back next year even tho they won't look as good on paper. Tough loss for them but at least guys like Burakovksy and Kuznetzov stepped up finally in the playoffs.

Not saying they will do what we did , but when we lost the cup in 08 and Hossa, Malone, etc left..we were a worse team on paper heading into the next season. Ended up winning the cup.

They just need to make the right moves this off season(still say they should trade OV, even with his drop in play theyd still get a huge return) and play with a chip on their shoulders from here on out. Stop focusing on winning the presidents trophy each year and use the regular season for what its intended for...to prepare for the playoffs.

Ovechkin was barely a concern to me this past series. Dude looked overweight and sluggish all series. Maybe it's the result of playing such a physical brand of hockey since he first came into the league. He needs to trim down at least 10-15 lbs if he wants to more effective IMO

The Caps will be amongst the leagues best for awhile but how they get over the 2nd round hump is anyone's guess. The only thing that truly stands out is a need for a true #1 dman because neither Niskanen or Carlson are but rather decent top pairing guys and getting a hungrier, more effective bottom 6. Eller, Beagle and Winnik aren't scaring anyone. In fact they combined for 0 goals for these playoffs.

Fair point, but it's a lot easier to outperform the way your team looks on paper when you happen to have the two best players in the NHL.

I do wonder if they keep Oshie, as in if he wants to stay on a choker team. Use that money to get some depth, bribe Vegas to take Orpik with a good pick.

With 3 cups i'd be fine with a small retool for a few years, then get back at it.

Yeah, you can't really complain at all when you get 3 cups out of it, but it's nice to see the Pens in the position they are with no real bad contracts going into next season to really keep that window open for the next 5 years or so.

Hossa has a $5.275 million cap hit the next 4 seasons. NHL Salary only $1 each of those seasons but the cap hit is tough to deal with. He'll turn 39 next season.

Have a lot of cap space tied up in the future to guys that probably won't play up to it. Like it's been said though, it's a good tradeoff for recent 3 Cups.

Yeah, throw in Seabrook and Toews and even a guy like Kruger and that's a lot of money tied up in nowhere near matching production. And then add in having to trade a guy like Teravainen just to dump Bickell's contract and all the traded first round picks and it's tough to find the cheap, capable young guys to fill the holes. The Pens have been really lucky to find guys like Guentzel, Rust, Sheary, Murray, etc late and grab guys like Schultz and Cole in discount trades in order to make up for traded/wasted top picks.

Not to mention Crosby and Malkin could have gotten contracts with bigger cap hits if they demanded such.

Very true, they certainly left us with more room to work with than they needed to, just like Toews and Kane did not even when they deserved the larger contracts less than Sid/Geno.

Both pairs knew the franchise would find a way to sign them both long term regardless of the demands. Toews and Kane took full advantage, while Crosby and Malkin did not. :handclap:

In fairness, Kane and Toews were probably underpaid on their 2nd contracts, while Sid and Geno got the big bucks right away. Chicago was able to be successful because Toews and Kane (and Hossa, Keith, Seabrook) had caphits below to well below their market values.
