Holy hell that's a massive deal. Leafs are in big trouble this summer. How did they only get him for 5 years, though?

I'm loving the narrative that 11.6, almost completely in signing bonus, is a discount because he wanted 14 million on an 8 year deal.

Marner's is gonna be at least 10.5, and if he and his agent really want to maximize it they could probably find someone to offer sheet for more at 7 years.

Gonna have at least 40 million of an 83 million cap on 4 players.

I wonder if that deal is going to be significant for more RFAs than just Marner. Marner directly/immediately. But across the league there are good young players scoring in the 1ppg ballpark who didn't win Cups or anything and that's quite a contract comparable for them too. It's not like he came in like Crosby and won scoring titles on his ELC. That's like a premium UFA contract relative to his production, where before the RFAs usually had to take a bit of a hit. $11.3M, $15.9Mx2 up front, all lockout-proof in signing bonuses... and a term that lets him go UFA as soon as possible. Nice for Matthews anyway! Maybe they really were afraid of offer sheets. It would be fun if that market cracked open a bit in the future.

If your McDavid you gotta be kicking yourself and wanting to stab your agent. Mathews will make not even a million less a season, will be an UFA 2 years before you and isn't even stuck playing for the mess that is Edmonton.

Matthews gambling that the cap goes up and his next deal is 8x15

Players who can command a lot of money now are potentially leaving a lot of cash on the table now in order to get an unfathomable amount of money when they are 28. When the deal you sign now is enough to set you up for life even if you get hurt and dont get another contract, it makes sense.

Also, only looked at the standings because the XM guys pointed out that with a win tonight and a Vancouver loss Chicago would 9nly be 3 points out of a playoff spot... crazy how really, really mediocre everyone in the West below the top 5 have been this year

Matthews riding into the Sonoran sunset in 5 years. The fallout would be amazing.

Captain Weber helped the Habs kick the crap out of the Jets tonight.

Given how much of the year he missed, hes having a hell of a season.

Would dearly love the Habs to get WC2 and knock out the Lightning..
Or better yet, Atlantic 3 and take out both the Leafs and the Bolts

The Central tonight:

Jets lose in regulation
Wild lose in regulation
Colorado loses in OT
Dallas loses in OT

Almost perfect, but the Blues had to shutout Tampa.

I haven't really looked at the entire standings till now and the wild card race is really anybody. Even the Kings are only 5 pts out of a wild card. The east is totally different where you are going to see a lot more sellers at the deadline.

Yeah, outside of the top 5 teams the West is a gongshow this year.
