I can blame the GM because he can always go to a shorter deal if nothing else is working. It’s his job to get this done, Fitz is paid to negotiate these deals and get the players on the ice. It’s his responsibility. It’s not like Bratt could have the one intractable agent in the world, that’s not an excuse.

Okay. lets give Bratt a 2 year $8 million dollar contract.

Not really though, the player might refuse a one year deal. What we need is a deadline, that's the biggest problem with non-arbitration RFAs, there's no deadline until Dec. 1 (or whatever it is this year).

It’s in February this year.

It's absolutely up to the both of them. Come on. If Bratt won't sign there's a reason. What if Bratt doesn't want a shorter deal?

Fitz was generous with Mack when it came to actual dollars. Maybe Bratt is upset the big money years are 2-3 yrs down the road in the deal due to the state of the league/franchise ?

What if Bratt's had enough here and he and his agent are quietly trying to force a trade by not giving in on their demands? Crazy thought, but nothing would surprise me.

If he wants out when he hasn't played a day for the new coach (who's presumably going to use him in a top six in a up-tempo system) or Fitz without an interim title then good riddance.

Yeah....neither of those scenarios make ANY sense.

So I choose to say that it's neither of those scenarios and it's just a case of Money and Term, per usual.

If there was a season where the limited leverage of non-arbitration RFAs was even more limited it is this season. Without butts in the seats, there's just not the desperate need to eek out every possible point this season. The fans will largely be kept at a distance and if a young player who isn't an obvious star misses time, there won't be an uprising. Season ticket holders won't be calling the offices demanding the team sign him the way that might happen in an ordinary year. All that aside, I hope this is just posturing and that both sides are being reasonable.

Agree. This is only magnified because of the VISA issue/COVID quarantine period in posters minds. At the end of the day Bratt will be signed at some point. As long as he is signed and ready to start the 21-22 season I am not worried about it.

While I understand your point and I dont mean to be obtuse.. missing an entire season would be quite damning to Bratt's value and development

I think Bratt realizes that as well and that is why he will be here. Now that Bratt and his agent see the Devils are not that worried about him missing games they have to start thinking about what the missing games cost him long term.

But again, what you're doing is assuming what Bratt and his Agent are thinking 'cause we don't know the particulars of that discussion with Fitz.

Though I do hope you're right.
