He had a good rookie season, but regressed last year.

If he's a ~65 point guy, it's a good deal.

If he's a ~50 point guy, it's an overpay

Seeing how RFA's want to get paid now, and how hard it is to get them signed - I like this deal for the Coyotes.
You lock up a guy that's going to get much better for a decent cap hit. Maybe high now, but it'll level itself out assuming he gets better.

I take it Keller will be playing with Kessel and the GM sees him taking a big step forward? Considering how the young kids are getting paid now doesn't seem too bad. If he does take a step and starts hitting 70 plus points it's a solid deal.

It’s not so high that if he remains a ~50pt player it’s not going to ruin the team, but if he progresses to the PPG player we all expected after his rookie year this will look amazing for many years when his comparable are getting $10+M

Yeah it works for Arizona since they don't have cap concerns.

For teams like Toronto, Calgary, Tampa, they can't afford to do this with players

With Kessel now a Coyote the GM likely expects Keller's numbers to take a nice upward bump this year so he wants to get this deal done now instead of next summer when he might even cost more.

One is signed for 5 years and the other one 8 years. I doubt Carolina is happy about the possibility of seeing Aho UFA in 5 years.
