Are the Habs title contenders if Carey Price gets back to 100%?

Or are they just an average team? With the talent and depth they have, could they make a legitimate run for the championship? Do you see them beating the likes of the Pens, Caps, Rangers, Maple Leafs (maybe), or even the Hawks in the playoffs? Or or or, they're a weak team who's goaltender saves them on a daily basis?

Edit: By 100% I mean back in-form to his MVP self, cause at the moment, he is slumping. He is not injured or hurt by any means.

Thoughts.

You are assuming that's his baseline. Instead of the years of inconsistency before his one great season.

Montreal very likely makes the playoffs. We'll see if Price can actually raise his game there for once.

as they are right now with everybody healthy? No
as others have said if they add a top 6 foward and a top 4 D i think they become pretty dangerous and could contend for the cup, time will tell

I am a Habs fan so I am biased. Yes they could be contenders. Absolutely.

Now with that being said with the parity in the league all it takes is to get a really hot goalie to go far in the playoffs. Their are now so many potential contending teams. Tampa Bay is out of the playoffs in the East and LA is in the last playoff spot in the West. If someone would have predicted that would have been the Cup finals at the start of the year not many people would say it is a stupid prediction.

Right now absolutely not.

If they make a trade for Duchene for futures though that could certainly change. They need another game changer up front and a guy like Duchene would do the trick.

Right this moment? No, of course not. A lot can happen very quickly. 20 games ago people's descriptions of good vs. bad teams would likely be very different.

They're about the same as they've been all year. Not a favourite by any stretch, but could potentially contend for the cup. They're in a group with a bunch of other potential contenders. I see both the Sharks and Pens making the conference finals in their respective conferences, so I think the Habs could do it. Would I bet on it? Probably not.

I was thinking of starting a thread on this but I think it'll work here.

Is it possible that a God-like 14-15 season propelled Price to unrealistic heights? 13-14, he had a very good season and a great playoff before his injury. He also won the Olympic gold with a great performance (albeit playing behind a juggernaut). But I believe goaltending going into those Olympics goaltending was considered the weak point on that team, Lundqvist was still considered the better goalie, and Quick was arguably also better. Anyway, Price was an excellent goalie but he was not considered this amazing all time great yet. Then he had his all time great 14-15 season. Then he had his great start in 15-16. But that was only a handful of games. Having only great games however, and coming off his season before, that start raised his stock even higher. But in the end, it was a small sample size. He had another great start this year. But now he's been pretty bad lately. It may well be a slump, Lundqvist for example has at least one horrible month every year of his career. However, if you look at things pessimistically, Price has been God-like for one season and starts of two seasons. Is it possible that he's an excellent, probably even great goalie, but we should pump our breaks on him being an all timer?

Even with Price in MVP form, he's not the problem no matter how many times people will ask... How much does it take to see that the defensive is beyond help, especially in PK ?

Then you have the fowards. Our clown of a coach banked on bottom six grinders and look where it's getting us. Center depth is pretty bad, aside from Galchenyuk who's clearly not feeling 100 %, it's pretty bad when you have Danault playing 1st center. Plekanec is about as invisible as it gets nowadays since even defensively, I can't even see him involved anymore. And aside from Radulov and Pacioretty, wingers aren't anything special. Lehkonen is showing promising future since it's his 1st year in the NHL, but Gallagher's right in the crease style backfired with refs having an eye on him. Shaw's more of a threat than a help with all of his idiotic penalties.

So no, Carey Price is not exactly in MVP form right now, but even playing under what we'd expect, if we actually had a decent team for once in a while, he'd be stellar enough and no one would even consider questioning his play.

There needs to be a positive change, maybe even many changes. Coach needs to go. PK specialist coach needs to go ASAP. GM needs to go all in for a real top six scoring threat. GM should add a top four left defenseman. Carey's not the problem, he's always part of the solution if these pylons in front of him could start defending him right.

yeah the player with an impressive record of 0 goals in 8 playoff games is all they need to become contenders.

You're trying too hard to sell your favorite team's player.

Are you seriously nit picking over an 8 game sample size? 6 pts, even if they're assists, in 8 playoff games isn't even bad. He's an elite player and is a bona fide #1 center, Duchene certainly puts them into the conversation as a contender.

The Habs have never been contenders.

The Atlantic is just a poor division.

With Tampa taking a dive there are no legitimate Cup contenders in the division.
