Dougie Hamilton wins NESN's Seventh Player Award

Bruins shut out Lightning
Chara, Seidenberg, and Tuukka Rask, three of the Bruins’ four most important players (Patrice Bergeron being the other), played a big part in keeping the explosive duo off the scoresheet. The one time Stamkos slipped free for a bona fide chance, Rask (30 saves) pushed to his left and flashed his glove at 12:20 of the second period.

“You could see that we feel comfortable with each other,†said Seidenberg. “We keep it simple. We talk to each other. We communicate well out there. It resulted in us shutting them down, for the most part. We gave up that one odd-man rush, but for the most part we kept them to the outside and kept them to not as many chances as they would have liked.â€

Lucic of Bruins picking up his game
The mystery, for most of the abbreviated 2013 season, has been what happened to that Milan Lucic? Thursday night, for reasons perhaps he doesn’t fully comprehend, that Lucic was back on the job at the Garden. He moved his feet. He applied himself to the forecheck. Lo and behold, he even engaged in a fight, his first in seven weeks, and not surprisingly, all of it factored into the sumptuous porridge of a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“If he keeps going that way,’’ noted Bruins coach Claude Julien, “we can’t ask for . . . ’’

Limited practice time hurting Bruins
“When you don’t practice, little things creep into your game,†said coach Claude Julien. “Little by little, it becomes a bigger issue. Things have crept into our game that have become a challenge for us.

“You wish you would have had more time in between games. You wish it was more of a normal schedule. But it isn’t.â€

Bruins show signs of life
The Bruins did not exactly play a great game against the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. But what the B’s did play was a hard, nasty game and, for who they are, that might be as an encouraging sign as any they’ve given in the past month that they do understand the playoffs are indeed coming.

And thanks to that display of muscle and a terrific performance from goalie Tuukka Rask, the Bruins clinched home ice for the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 2-0 victory at the Garden. Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg and forward Daniel Paille handled the scoring as the B’s remained tied with the Montreal Canadiens at 61 points, but in first place in the Northeast Division due to a game in hand.

Solid start for newbie Carl Soderberg
Asked about what kind of advice he’s given to new linemate Carl Soderberg, Chris Kelly initially laughed.

“He might want to get advice from the other guy in our line,†Kelly said, referencing future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr.

For Soderberg, who joined the Bruins last week, playing on the third line with Kelly and Jagr has been “amazing.†And though it’s easy to be awestruck by Jagr, Soderberg finds himself watching and trying to emulate Kelly

Milan Lucic finds some fight
Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Keith Aulie adopted a highly peculiar, if understandable, stance when he engaged Milan Lucic in a fist fight last night at the Garden.

Aulie spent most of the bout with his head turned in the opposite direction, waving an ineffectual jab or two in Lucic’s direction, while mostly just trying to stay as far away as possible from the bombs Lucic was throwing.

In a non-playoff season, Aulie figured he didn’t need a broken jaw to begin the offseason. Who can blame him?

Latest shutout could get Tuukka Rask rolling
With more than 17,000 screaming fans on their feet, his name rang out in unison.

“Tuukka, Tuukka, Tuukka.â€

The electricity was enough to give any goalie goosebumps, but last night at the Garden, the honor went to Tuukka Rask. All he had to do was make highlight save after highlight save en route to his fifth shutout of the season — a 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Notebook: Dougie Hamilton nets 7th Player Award
Whether Dougie Hamilton suits up for the start of the playoffs remains to be seen, but Bruins fans made it clear that they appreciate what the 19-year-old rookie has done.

The defenseman last night was named the 7th Player Award winner, given annually to the player who goes above and beyond expectations as voted by the fans.

In 42 games this year, Hamilton has 5-11-16 totals and is a plus-4 rating.

Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid recognized for perseverance
BOSTON — It’s been another season of hard knocks for Adam McQuaid. He’s just back from a minor leg injury, which followed a more serious shoulder injury, which interrupted a season that almost didn’t even begin for him because he needed two major surgeries to deal with a blood clot in his upper body.
