Bruins lose to Flyers, 5-2
PHILADELPHIA – Halfway through the third period, with his team trailing by three goals, Claude Julien waved his white flag.
Julien, who had pulled Anton Khudobin in the second period, put his starter back in. The Bruins coach instructed his players to keep their shifts short. All Julien wanted was for the train wreck to end without any of his players getting hurt.
“You run through your four lines, try to give them as much rest, and try to prevent injuries by [not] playing guys too much,†Julien said after the 5-2 loss to the Flyers Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center. “It’s a crappy way to coach. It’s not the way we wanted to coach this game. Unfortunately, it’s the hand we were dealt.â€

Bruins finalizing defense for playoffs
PHILADELPHIA — Of the variables Claude Julien considers when setting his defensive lineup, stick position is an important factor. Ideally, all defensemen — Dennis Seidenberg is the exception — play most of their minutes on their strong side.
They can turn to retrieve pucks in the corner more smoothly. They can fish pucks off the wall. They can make crisp outlet passes to the strong-side wing.
“The pivoting, for most players, is always better on the outside with the reach of the stick,†explained Julien, a former defenseman. “Passing is the same thing. When you get the puck on your off wing, you’ve got to twist your body to pass it to your strong-side winger. It takes some adjustment for some guys. Some guys like it. Some guys don’t. I played both sides. I didn’t mind it. But I know for a lot of players, they find it very uncomfortable. Every player has a different feel about that.â€

Bruins take ‘step back’
PHILADELPHIA — The Northeast Division is there for the Bruins’ taking. They just refuse to grab hold of it.
With the Canadiens losing to the New Jersey Devils last night, the B’s had a chance to create some space between themselves and the Habs. Instead, they too lost to an injury-riddled also-ran, dropping an ugly 5-2 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers broke a 1-1 tie with two goals (one of the slapstick variety) in seven seconds in the second period and didn’t look back.

Adam McQuaid hard to keep down
PHILADELPHIA — A couple of weeks before the lockout-shortened season began, Adam McQuaid looked like a shell of his former self, his once-strapping frame still gaunt from the two emergency surgeries he had undergone in October after a blood clot was discovered near his collarbone.
But when the Bruins opened the season on Jan. 19, McQuaid was in the lineup.
And just last Sunday, the defenseman looked like he might be out for a while as he peglegged his way around the pressbox due to an apparent knee injury, courtesy of a questionable check from Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke

PHILADELPHIA — Call it a win for the Flyers and Boston charities.
Make it one blown opportunity for the Bruins to stand alone atop the Northeast Division.
Matt Read and Oliver Lauridsen scored 7 seconds apart to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.
The Bruins are second in the Eastern Conference and lead the division. But the Bruins and Montreal both have 59 points. New Jersey beat Montreal 3-2 on Tuesday night. With three games left for Boston, and two for Montreal, the race for second will come down to the final week
