Many European players that were / are considering the move to the NHL this off season might reconsider and delay it at least for a year to have a chance to participate in the Olympics.

Examples are Nikita Gusev, Kirill Kaprizov etc

FHR president Vladislav Tretiak: we will try to convince the players not to go to the NHL this year.

Not quite sure "Another" is justified here.
I mean, didn't everyone came up with this the minute announcement was made?

The NHL will most likely be in China for the '22 Olympics. Delaying your NHL development/career by potentially 2 years makes no sense. This is most likely an idle threat.

Also, provide a source.

So they are willing to lose millions and at least a year of development to stay and play for the Olympics. Seems pretty risky to me.

I thought people wanted to move the draft age up to 20 for development reasons anyways. I'm sure if pittsburgh could wait for malkins draft +2 season this is really a non factor

The IIHF will allow it and the IOC really has no legal grounds to prevent those players to go.

They can make it so the Olympics are back to being amateurs only, as penance for the NHL skipping out in '18. Fasel already said the NHL can't pick and choose which OG they are going to attend.

Except they're not going to do that. They're going to want khl and whatever European leagues there.

This and this. The IOC could stop the NHL players from going but then they would lose out on so many other sports it would completely destroy them.

Amateur athletes are a good thing but the reality of it is that pro athletes bring in more money.

Destroy who? The IOC?

A brand built on athletes they don't pay, venues paid by the taxpayers of the host nation, with events ran by volunteers. The Olympics and their business model is one of the greatest money-making schemes in human history. And as long as nations buy into it, will always be around, whether it's pure amateurs or professionals.

Good to know you work for the IOC!

And by amateur I meant athletes who are not paid to play their sports. So the Phelps' of the world would be fine as they are not compensated for swimming (endorsements are different).

But that's what the world championships are for, pro athletes. Almost every sport, not just hockey, has them for the best of the best every year. The Olympics were meant for amateurs and should be for mostly amateurs. You don't get miracle on ice moments with only pro's. Look at Olympic basketball, it's a joke watching team USA steamroll everyone every game. If they had only college kids it may help the NCAA product as kids would stay to keep their eligibility and also make the Olympics more competitive and fun to watch.

There's no reason to believe that anyone's interested in that. Just because the IOC and the NHL have a problem doesn't mean they're going to shut out professionals all over the world that are happy to participate. It would actually make it easy for the NHL going forward, so even as a "penance", it's a bad idea.

Phelps is worth like 50 million and all he does is swim. He's not an amature .

Idc who is paying you if you're living off of a sport it's your profession

Well, that distinction makes zero sense. "We're okay with you making millions of dollars in endorsements based on you being among the best in your field, but if your sport is somehow organized enough for you to even make a $50k annual salary off it directly, sorry, you're obviously too professional for this event."

All the cross country skiers are payed by their country as an example. There is almost no amateurs left in the Olympics, please drop the amateur argument.

Not sure the NHL will be able to exist as a league if Nikita Gusev and Kirill Kaprizov don't come over. What a disaster.
