Gord Murphy: 261 games for the Flyers... 601 elsewhere. (traded age 24 (Garrey Galley, Wes Waltz... fair enough really.)

Dmitri Yushkevich: 197 games for the Flyers initially...571 elsewhere and 18 more for Flyers when old. (traded age 24 for Zubrus pick.)

Janne Niinimaa: 143 games for the Flyers...598 elsewhere. (traded age 22 for McGillis.)

Kevin McCarthy: 84 games for the Flyers...453 elsewhere. (traded age 21 for Dennis Ververgaert.)

Dennis Seidenberg: 93 games for the Flyers... 522 elsewhere. (traded age 24 for Nedved.)

Joni Pitkanen: 206 games for the Flyers... 329 elsewhere. (traded age 23.)

So of the 11 truly significant NHL D men the Flyers have ever drafted 7 were traded by 24 years old... mainly for forwards.

Even the ones who 'stayed' for significant time with the Flyers:
Wilson was traded age 24.
Bladon was traded age 25.


So that is a grand total of 2/11 good D men they kept past age 25.

This is why we should worry about Hagg, Morin, & Ghost developing as best they can. AND NOT RUSHING MORIN!

Pitkanen is about the only guy I can think of, and even he skipped town before he was at his best.

Statistically his best year was with the Flyers during the 2005-2006 season, 46 points (13G & 33A) in 58 games.

He could have been something if he wasn't so damn mentally fragile.

MAB has to get to an AHL level first; he hasn't played in a long time. Gus has beaten out Manning in the past. Those guys have a ways to go still.

Gus is better than them and Meszaros right now.

Maybe not so much. Every game Mez has miss was a coaches decision. The same can't be said for Gus, he got injured allowing Mez to come in. He plays at almost a ppg pace in the games then gets yanked in favor of Gus. That should tell you something about what the coaches think of his defense considering offense certainly wasn't the issue.

I think it was a matchup thing, the Bruins forecheck and cycle would give Mez some trouble. Not that other guys wouldn't have issues with it too (they have, obviously), but it's a good time to dress Gus who's pretty mobile back there.
