15th + Kerfoot/Johnsson for Manson...

Kerfoot and Johnsson would have negative value to the Ducks. They'd be taking positions away from younger guys who should be as good/better than those players. If it's going to be 15th+ for Manson, it would be better value for Toronto to trade one/both of them to another team for picks/prospects and deal those to the Ducks.

Rakell and Manson around 2M would be pretty damn tempting. Maybe for Nylander + Liljigren. Would only do it if the Leafs get Pietrangelo.

Hyman - Matthews - Rakell
Mikheyev - Tavares - Marner
Johnsson - Kerfoot - Barabanov

Rielly - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Manson

I find the reactions here fascinating. From the ducks perspective, this is the type of trade you make when you're in full rebuild mode. I'm not sure the Ducks front office and fans feel that is the case. Also, the trade pretty much caps out the ducks (if it works at all) so they're handcuffed at least for the next 2 years. Honestly, this is a tough trade for Anaheim to make unless they REALLY like Nylander or are wanting to tank for a few years.

At the same time, from Toronto's perspective, this is exactly the type of trade you make in your window when you have a poorly balanced or flawed team. Toronto is getting a cheap replacement for Nylander (not a huge drop off), a key piece RHD (who brings the grit and physicality that has been sorely missing) AND about $3M in annual cap savings. And keep in mind the retention/cap savings is for two seasons. So combined with Barrie's departure, today's trade of Kapanen, and other moves, Toronto can sign a third "big time" UFA (Pietrangelo or another high level player) who fills a third hole. Or maybe they get goalie help.

The 15th pink in the 2020 draft is a nice asset, but any player they draft won't help for at least 2 years (probably more).

the savings from 50% retained on super good contracts with Rakell and Manson would be a game changer for Toronto. Would free up a ton to make a big fa move or trade and the team would be way better off with Manson, Rakell and big trade or fa than just Nylander.

And when Manson and Rakell walk in two years and the leafs are down a #1 winger, 15th overall and a potential top 4 RHD how does that work for them?

It's pretty short sighted to make a deal like this when your core star players are in their early 20's.

Leafs will probably consider Manson for the 1st but not much more than that

Suprised Leaf fans are automatically dismissing this. Steep price but gives the Leafs 2 quality players at really cheap cap hits for 2 years plus quite a bit of additional cap savings. Along with Manson they could roll that extra 3M into another quality defender and be a much more balanced team for at least 2 years.

Its going to take a lot more than the 15th pick to get Manson from the ducks. Like Lilegren and another piece. That's been debated forever on here. And today's trade sure seems to make Manson and Rakell more valuable - not less.

Why are you assuming both Manson and Rakell walk? My guess is Toronto would resign at least one - probably Manson to a Muzzin like deal.

In terms of the short sighted comment, its true that this type of trade is selling futures for now. Is your goal to have a good (not great) team for the next 5-7 years as your young core ages up, or are you trying to compete for the cup in the next 1-3 years? Because if its the later, then this is the type of trade you make, particularly when you're now looking at a flat cap that really limits Toronto's ability to make moves. And candidly, given Toronto's struggles and unbalanced roster, it is going to take a trade like this to fix the problem in the long term.

Given the holes on the roster - particularly on D and in the net where Anderson is likely traded or let go as a UFA - I don't see Toronto winning a cup in the foreseeable future without trading an expensive piece (Nylander or Marner). It could be that Dubas lacks the will to do that, in which case I don't see things changing.

Manson is going into the same contract year Muzzin got moved in mid season..And the Muzzin deal was a B prosepct+playoff team 1st rounder. Manson is not as good as Muzzin so why would he have more value in a trade? People are not understanding the value of that 1st round pick. We may need to add to the pick a bit to get Manson but not a ton.

I think the fact that Muzzin was openly available and Manson isn’t.

I agree the original post is too much for toronto, and too risky Very all in move.
15th should be the main talking point in manson if he is moved
