Am I crazy to think that Desharnais is outplaying Broberg on the depth chart?

Desharnais is a brick wall, and is playing at an elite level in his first six games in the NHL. With all the talk of moving Broberg, could
Vinny Desharnais be making a trade for Broberg easier.

It seems obvious that the clear upgrade on the backend would be for Brett Kulak, but with trade bait of Niemalen and potentially even Broberg. We could be reaching the price tag of the highest end rentals (Chychrun, and Lindholm).

I wouldn't mind seeing a package of Kulak, Broberg, and a 2024 1st. But I say this because of Desharnais' play.

Is this out to lunch?

Broberg? Don't you mean Bouchard?

If Bouchard carries the value of a high 1st round pick at the TDL, I'd move him for a significant short-term upgrade on RD. The only thing that has made Bouchard tolerable is the fact he's on an ELC. Can't say the same next season

The time to move Bouchard is this off-season. His value will never be higher. Once he gets his payday and remains a bottom pairing PP specialist, he will become Puljujaarvi.

I think he will have some really high scoring seasons here just by virtue of who he will get to play with on the PP eventually and his trade value will be higher coming off like a 15 goal/50 point type season obviously than it would be this coming summer.

Broberg may well go through the same shit next year.

D progression is often not linear, you want to build your D through the D, this unfortunately is the ugly side of it that a lot of people don't like.

I don't think Bouchard will ever be some kind of shut down d-man, but probably a guy who can put up a fair amount of points.

He will basically top as Barrie in the best case scenario. That's not bad but it will depend on the price.

I think the time is before the TDL. That way he is off the team NOW for a potential 2023 playoff run. Removing Bouch in his current state is a win in itself and the return he would get is another boost. Same goes with Pulju & Yamo. The Oilers had a rough time in the 1st round of the draft from 2016-2018

Bouchard is in a classic Sophomore slump. He'' figure it out and be a big part of this organization going forward.

Wow...

This thread has the worst case of shiny new toy syndrome I have ever seen.

While its not proactive the only move is wait and see. Broberg can, and likely will, struggle moving forward. Development is not linear.

Bouchard is still developing, his best comparable has always been John Carlson who didnt amount to much until much later in his career.

You keep both if you think they have any chance of becoming what their draft pedigree suggests.

If either prices themselves out, you deal. But as long as they stay reasonable you keep them.

3-4 years after the draft, the draft pedigree means very little at this point. Not surprise to see a prospect drafted much later than Broberg is excelling. Development is not linear. If it was, Pulju would be killing it right now

This is why we need to bridge him. If we can trade him on a three year deal next year, with a 50 point season to his name, we can make a killing in the returns (that is if we even want to trade him).

He's already shown too much inconsistency and too little defense for me to commit the type of money it would take to keep him around for 6-8 years.

Trading 2 of our active LD is dumb considering Vinny is a RD. If Chychrun gets injured (history shows)that would leave us with Nurse and Nemo and another fragile player in Murray. Not good.

Ok you have convinced me I am wrong based on what side of the ice they play on. The idea that Vinny is a shiny new toy is somewhat missconceited because although he was not on a lot of our radars for a long time, it sounds like he was the best defenseman in Bakersfield for some time. I am positing that we have found black gold in this player, but it seems the temperament towards that is a bit more reserved. Understandable.

It would be such a good story if he becomes a permanent NHLer but zero chance he's ahead of Broberg right now.

Vinny is 26. Imagine what Broberg can be at 26 with time to grow.
